Potomac Shores station is a planned Virginia Railway Express Fredericksburg Line station that will be located in Dumfries, Virginia. Construction is expected to begin no sooner than late 2024.

History

The station is being built as part of a residential community. It shares the right-of-way on the CSX RF&P Subdivision with Amtrak's Northeast Regional, Silver Meteor, Silver Star, Palmetto, Auto Train , and Carolinian trains; however, no Amtrak trains are planned to stop here. The station was first announced in 2013 with the approval of the Potomac Shores residential community, and originally planned to open in 2017. The design of the station has changed over the decade to accommodate planned expansions of the rail line (such as the new passenger bridge parallel to the existing Long Bridge) and VRE service.

By April 2021, a construction contract was expected to be awarded in late 2021, with construction expected to take roughly eighteen months. [1]

Construction on the adjacent parking garage began in May 2023, with completion expected in late 2024. At that time, construction of the station was not expected to begin until the garage was finished. [2]

The RF&P Subdivision is a railroad line operated by CSX Transportation and jointly owned by CSX and Virginia. It runs from Washington, D.C., to Richmond, Virginia, over lines previously owned by the Pennsylvania Railroad and the Richmond, Fredericksburg and Potomac Railroad. The line's name pays homage to that railroad, which was a predecessor to the CSX.
