Rebecca Anne Womeldorf is an American lawyer serving as the reporter of decisions of the Supreme Court of the United States. Womeldorf was appointed in December 2020 and began her service in January 2021. She is the second woman to hold the position. [1]
Womeldorf earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Rhodes College in 1988 and Juris Doctor from the Washington and Lee University School of Law in 1991,graduating summa cum laude. [1]
Womeldorf served as law clerk to then retired Justice Lewis F. Powell Jr. and Justice Anthony Kennedy,both of the Supreme Court of the United States. [1] She practiced law in Washington,D.C. as a litigation partner at Hollingsworth LLP from 1999 until 2015. She then served as Secretary and chief counsel to the Committee on Rules of Practice and Procedure of the Judicial Conference of the United States through early 2021,overseeing staff responsible for providing administrative,legal,and technical support to the committee and its advisory committees. The United States courts of appeals are the intermediate appellate courts of the United States federal judiciary. The courts of appeals are divided into 13 "Circuits". Eleven of the circuits are numbered "First" through "Eleventh" and cover geographic areas of the United States and hear appeals from the U.S. district courts within their borders. The District of Columbia Circuit covers only Washington,DC. The Federal Circuit hears appeals from federal courts across the United States in cases involving certain specialized areas of law. The courts of appeals also hear appeals from some administrative agency decisions and rulemaking,with by far the largest share of these cases heard by the D.C. Circuit. Appeals from decisions of the courts of appeals can be taken to the U.S. Supreme Court.
