Ronald van der Kemp (born 24 September 1964 in Wijchen, Netherlands [1] ) is a Dutch fashion designer and founder of demi-couture fashion house RVDK Ronald van der Kemp, [2] his namesake label.

Early career

Van der Kemp graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy of Art and Design in Amsterdam in 1989 with a BA in fashion design. [3] His early career took him to major fashion cities Paris, Milan and New York, working as creative director, consultant and chief designer for brands including Bill Blass, [4] Barneys New York and Guy Laroche, where he succeeded Elbar Albaz. [5] He also worked at Celine. [6] It was in these years as a consultant that van der Kemp honed his technical expertise. [7]

Own label

In August 2014 van der Kemp launched his demi-couture label, RVDK Ronald van der Kemp, presenting his first ‘wardrobe’ during the Paris haute couture calendar in 2015. [8] Shunning the fashion system’s way of doing things, van der Kemp’s proposed ‘wardrobe’ consisted of a selection of limited-edition items that were seasonless and timeless, ethically made with existing fabrics, [9] and crafted by hand in small ateliers in Amsterdam. [10]

Net-a-Porter, the luxury ecommerce group, was the first retailer to buy van der Kemp’s demi-couture collection, [11] which has since been worn by celebrities including Selena Gomez,[ citation needed ] Kate Moss, [12] Lady Gaga, [13] Katy Perry, Dakota Johnson, Adriana Lima [14] and Karlie Kloss.

<i>Haute couture</i> Creation of exclusive, custom-fitted clothing

Haute couture is the creation of exclusive custom-fitted high-end fashion design. The term "Haute couture" is French, "haute" meaning "high" or "elegant," and "couture" translating to "sewing" or "dressmaking." Bodice is a composition of vesture, traditionally for women and girls, covering the torso from the neck to the waist. The term Haute Couture generally refers to a specific type of upper garment common in Europe during the 16th to the 18th century, or to the upper portion of a modern dress to distinguish it from the skirt and sleeves. Beginning in the mid-nineteenth century, Paris became the centre of a growing industry that focused on making outfits from high-quality, expensive, often unusual fabric and sewn with extreme attention to detail and finished by the most experienced and capable of sewers—often using time-consuming, hand-executed techniques. Josephus Melchior Thimister was a Dutch interior decorator and noted fashion designer who launched his eponymous fashion label, THIMISTER in 1997. In 2001, the editor-in-chief of Vogue USA Anna Wintour named Josephus Thimister as one of the Twenty-First Century's best fashion designers. In 2010, Cathy Horyn writing for The New York Times described his couture show and its pieces as, "fascinating (…) quite clear in military shapes and broken elegance. Dresses like melted down family silver". After a brief period with Karl Lagerfeld as an assistant, he worked as a designer at Jean Patou before being appointed director of luxury prêt-à-porter at the house of Balenciaga. It was for the next five and a half years that Thimister would spend reviving the brand with his pure, succinctly modernist vision. He then set up his own Paris-based house in 1997, and thereafter presented both haute couture and prêt-à-porter collections under his name.

Since then, Van Herpen has continuously exhibited her new collections at Paris Fashion Week. Carmen Busquets is a Venezuelan entrepreneur, philanthropist and investor who was an early champion of the fashion-tech space. She was the co-founder and founding investor in Net-a-Porter. Since 1992, Busquets has invested £50 million in fashion-tech companies in the United Kingdom and the United States, generating an estimated 10,000 jobs.
