Saint Joseph University of Beirut in Dubai ("USJ-Dubai") was founded in 2008. It is a branch campus of the prestigious Saint Joseph University in Beirut, Lebanon. [1]

USJ-Dubai is accredited by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority of the United Arab Emirates. It is located in the Dubai International Academic City. It offers three degrees:

  1. Bachelor of Laws (LLB) of USJ's Faculty of Law and Political Science.
  2. Master of Laws (LLM) in Business Law a graduate degree of USJ's Faculty of Law and Political Science.
  3. Master of Arts in translation of USJ's School of Translators and Interpreters.

History of the School of Translators

Since its foundation in 1980, the School of Translators and Interpreters of Beirut (French: École de Traducteurs et d'Interprètes de Beyrout (ETIB)) has been training senior translators and interpreters with the highest standards to master Arabic, French, and English languages as well as intercultural competencies by helping them to adapt to cultural differences, sharpen strong analytical and deductive skills, and develop professional judgment. A member of International Standing Conference of University Institutes of Translators and Interpreters (CIUTI), the International Federation of Translators (IFT), recognized by the International Association of Conference Interpreters (AIIC), and having a long-standing and close relation with the United Nations and the European Parliament, ETIB aspires to be an active member among the university institutions of the world and a pole of excellence in the fields of research and innovation in the Arab world.

The Master of Arts in Translation

USJ-Dubai offers a Master of Arts in Translation upon the completion of:

- A full-time track of 15 months.

- A part-time track of 18 to 24 months.

The curriculum includes the bases of translation from English into Arabic and Arabic into English. It also covers French and other Romance languages. It covers thematic concepts and terminologies related to the following specific fields: Literature, Journalism, Media, and Copywriting, Law, Economy, International Conferences/ Organizations, Banks, IT systems. [2]

Mathieu Guidere is a full professor at the University of Paris and research director at the French National Institute of Health (INSERM). A scholar of Linguistics and Translation studies, he has held other professorships at prestigious institutions including the University of Geneva, Switzerland. Dr. Guidere is also the founder of the Swiss Non-governmental organization (NGO) Multilingual International Mediators (MIM), and has been awarded a Fulbright Prize to advance his research on the psychology of terrorism. He has been also editor-in-chief of the French Journal of Languages' Professors, Les Langues Modernes. In 2015, he was also Team Leader of the European Union CVE Program in the Sub-Saharan Region. In 2017, he was also the UNOWAS Senior Expert in West Africa and the Sahel Region for countering violent extremism.

Marianne Lederer is a French translation scholar. Lederer further developed the Interpretive Theory of Translation together with Danica Seleskovitch, who first proposed the theory. Lederer also published several works on translation and interpreting pedagogy. Her works have greatly influenced interpreting and translation research and teaching internationally.
