Building History
The Sausalito Public Library was founded in 1906 by Father John Valentini and the Reverend George Maxwell on the second floor of the Sausalito Land & Ferry Company building on Bridgeway. In 1909 the Library was moved to 733 Bridgeway where it was expanded by stages to fill the entire second floor of the old City Hall. It remained there for the next sixty years. Although redeemed by the delightful bay view, the Library became increasingly crowded and uncomfortable and the steep stairs made access difficult.
As the city's population grew, the library's collection and use increased. In 1964 the City Council established a library over-ride tax which existed from 1965 to 1973. In 1974, when the city purchased the old Central School building at 420 Litho Street for a Civic Center, the Library moved into the former school auditorium on a temporary basis.
Various library building schemes were explored but the plans never came to fruition. In 1976, when rising costs seemed to preclude a separate library building, the City Council, with the advice of the Library Board, decided to remodel the auditorium. MLTW/Turnbull Associates were hired as architects in July 1977 and construction began in March 1979. Expanded shelving and additional seating were provided and an elevator was installed which serves the entire building. The remodeled library, with its high ceilings and tall windows looking out to the bay, opened in September 1979.

It is located 1.5 miles northwest of downtown Sausalito, 8 miles (13 km) south-southeast of San Rafael, and about 5 miles (8 km) north of San Francisco from the Golden Gate Bridge, at an elevation of 23 feet (7.0 m). Marin City was developed for housing starting in 1942, to accommodate wartime shipyard workers and other migrants to California. Among those were African Americans from the South in the Great Migration, which continued until 1970.
Richardson Bay is a shallow, ecologically rich arm of San Francisco Bay, managed under a Joint Powers Agency of four northern California cities. The 911-acre (369 ha) Richardson Bay Sanctuary was acquired in the early 1960s by the National Audubon Society. The bay was named for William A. Richardson, early 19th century sea captain and builder in San Francisco. It contains both Strawberry Spit and Aramburu Island.
Marinship Corporation was a shipbuilding company of the United States during World War II, created to build the shipping required for the war effort. Founded in 1942, the shipyard built 93 cargo ships and oil tankers, before ending operations 1945.

Schoonmaker Point is a low-lying landform jutting into San Francisco Bay at Sausalito, California. This area was created by dredge spoils from Richardson Bay during local Marin Shipyards shipbuilding activity during World War II. Schoonmaker Point is situated approximately 1.7 miles (2.7 km) south of the Sausalito/Marin City interchange of U.S. Highway 101 immediately north of Bridgeway Boulevard. The Schoonmaker Point Marina is located here, along with a 2.3-acre (9,300 m2) sand beach.. From Schoonmaker Point there are views of Mount Tamalpais and the San Francisco downtown skyline.
Marincello was a failed development project in Marin County, California that would have put a planned community atop the Marin Headlands, overlooking the Golden Gate. Its upheaval set the precedent for Marin County's rigid anti-development stance and push for open space.

Rancho Saucelito was a 19,752-acre (79.93 km2) Mexican land grant in present-day Marin County, California, given in 1838 by Governor Juan Alvarado to William A. Richardson. The name means "ranch of the little willow grove". The grant extended from the Pacific Ocean on the west, to Mount Tamalpais to the north, and the Arroyo Corte Madera del Presidio and Richardson Bay on the east; and included present-day Muir Beach, Stinson Beach, Sausalito, Tamalpais Valley, and Homestead Valley.

Forbes Island is a floating island near Holland Tract, California, United States. It was formerly a restaurant, located between Pier 39 and Pier 41 in Fisherman's Wharf, San Francisco. It was the only "floating island" restaurant in the Bay Area. The restaurant was inspired by Captain Nemo's marine dwelling. The restaurant closed in 2017, and the floating platform was moved to its current location at Holland Riverside Marina in Brentwood, California.
