Sharad Joshi was an Indian poet, writer, satirist and a dialogue and scriptwriter in Hindi films and television. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1990. [1]

Biography

Early life and education

Sharad Joshi was born on 21 May 1931 in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh to Shriniwas and Santi Joshi, a second child in the family of two sons, and 4 daughters.

Family

In the late 1950s, when Sharad Joshi was writing for newspapers and radio in Indore, he met and married Irfana Siddiqi (later Irfana Sharad). She was a writer, radio artiste and a theater actress from Bhopal. The couple had three daughters: Bani, Richa and Neha Sharad. Neha Sharad is an actress and poet. [2] [3]

Essays and plays

Sharad Joshi has written many satirical essays on political, social, cultural and economical topics, such as Atha Shri Ganeshaya Namah, Billiyon ka Artha Shastra, Buddhijivi, Sahitya ka Mahabali, Adhyaksha Mahodaya [4] .

Sharad Joshi also wrote satirical plays. His plays Ek Tha Gadha Urf Aladad Khan and Andhon Ka Haathi are popular for satire and timeless humour [5]

His books and essay collections include Parikrama, Kisi Bahane, Tilasm, Jeep par The Sawar Illian, Raha Kinare Baith, Meri Shreshth Rachnaye, Dusri Satah, Yatha Sambhav, Yatra Tatra Sarvatra, Yatha Samay, Ham Bhrashtan ke Bhrasht Hamare, and Pratidin [6] [7]

Legacy

Madhya Pradesh government has instituted an award in his memory titled, "Sharad Joshi Samman", given each year to individuals for outstanding achievement in the field of writing. It includes a cash award of Rs. 51,000 and citation. [10]

His daughter Neha Sharad also organized Shradotsav in 2016, a literary and theatre festival (which has plays as well as a book fair), to commemorate her father's work. [11]

Harishankar Parsai was an Indian writer who wrote in Hindi. He was a noted satirist and humorist of modern Hindi literature and is known for his simple and direct style. He wrote vyangya (satire), which described human values and nature. They reflected his critical thinking and humorous way of describing simple things with huge meanings. Parsai won the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1982, for his satire, Viklaang Shraddha ka daur.

K. P. Saxena was an Indian satirist and writer. He was employed by the Indian Railways and was a prolific writer for magazines and newspapers. He started writing for Doordarshan's famous serial Bibi Natiyon Wali. He wrote vyangya articles for almost every popular magazine of Hindi. His first book of satire Koi Patthar Se Na Mare was published in 1982. His style is unique and he is very popular among poets in Kavi Sammelans. He was an expert of three Indian language Urdu, Hindi and Awadhi. He was awarded Padma Shri by Government of India, in year 2000. He died on 31 October 2013. He was a regular in Hindi Kavi Sammelan.

He presently resides in Bhopal and continues to work as a freelance writer. His poems have been translated into English, German, Russian, Urdu and into many other Indian languages. Avadh Kishore Jadia is a poet and author in the Bundeli language and the Braj language from the Chhatarpur district in the Indian State of Madhya Pradesh. He was also an Ayurveda medical practitioner in the Madhya Pradesh Govt Service. In the year 2022, Govt of India honored him by conferring the Padma Shri award for his contributions as an author in the Bundeli and Braj languages.

Shri Krishna Saral was an Indian poet and writer. Most of his works are about Indian revolutionaries, 15 of which are mahakavyas (epics). He is hailed as a 'Yug-Charan' for his nationalist poetry reminiscent of the sacrificial traditions of Indian soldiers. "Mai Amar Shahido ka Charan" composed by him is a very popular Hindi language poem.

Usha Yadav is an Indian educationist, writer of contemporary Hindi literature, and recipient of the Padma Shri award. She has been a faculty member at Central Institute of Hindi, Agra, Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar University, and Kanhaiyalal Maniklal Munshi Institute of Hindi. She is the President of the Literary and Cultural Organization Indradhanush and Secretary of the Oriental Research Institute. She has been honored with over 10 major accolades, including the highest honour of children's literature, the Balsahitya Bharti by UP Hindi Sansthan, Lucknow. She has published more than a hundred books, out of which her novel 'Kahe Ri Nalini' was awarded the All India Veersingh Dev Award by Sahitya Academy, Madhya Pradesh. In 2021, she was honoured with the Padma Shri in the field of Hindi literature and education at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Dehli by the Government of India, which is the fourth-highest civilian award of the Republic of India.
