Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim (born 2 February 1949; better known as Sheikh Selim) [1] is a Bangladeshi politician who is a Jatiya Sangsad member representing the Gopalganj-2 constituency since 1991. He is a member of the standing committee of Bangladesh Awami League party. [2] [3] [4] He also served as the minister of Health and Family Welfare during 1999–2001.
Selim is the son of Sheikh Nurul Haque and Sheikh Asia Begum, sister of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, former president of Bangladesh. He is the younger brother of Sheikh Fazlul Haque Mani, founder of Jubo League. [5] He is a first-cousin of the current Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. [6]
Selim is descended from the Tungipara Sheikh family from both his parents. His father's grandfather, Qudratullah Sheikh, was the brother of his mother's great-great-grandfather, Ekramullah Sheikh. Sheikh Mujib was both his uncle and nephew (son of his third-cousin Sheikh Lutfar Rahman).
Salim is the current parliamentary representative for the constituency of Gopalganj-2. He is a Presidium member of Bangladesh Awami League. [7] He has won parliamentary elections from Gopalganj-2 nine times, since 1980. [8] He served as the Minister for Health and Family Welfare in the First Sheikh Hasina Cabinet. [9] He is the Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health and Family Welfare Ministry. [10]
On 23 April 2008, Bangladesh Anti Corruption Commission sued him for corruption at the Ramna Police Station. He secured bail from the High Court on 16 September 2008. [11] The High Court, in September, stayed proceeding of the case against Selim. On 24 October 2010, Supreme Court stayed the High Court order, allowing the case to proceed. [12]
Selim's eldest son Sheikh Fazle Fahim served as president of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce & Industries and is married to the daughter of businessman Moosa Bin Shamsher. [13] [14] Another son Sheikh Nayem is married to the daughter of BNP politician Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku. [15] One of Selim's grandsons, Zayan Chowdhary, died in the 2019 Sri Lanka Easter bombings. The child's father Moshiul Haque Chowdhary was wounded, though his mother, Selim's daughter Sheikh Amina Sultana Sonia, was unharmed. [16]
Gopalganj is a district in the Dhaka Division of Bangladesh. The district has 1,172,415 inhabitants and its surface area is 1,490 km2. The main town of the district is also called Gopalganj. It is the bank of the Madhumati river and located at 23°00’47.67" N 89°49’21.41". It is bounded by Faridpur district on the North, Pirojpur and Bagerhat district on the south, and Barisal district on the east and Narail district on the West. This district is also known as "GP" to the youth. Gopalganj is subdivided into five sub-districts (upazila/thana).

Founded by Syed Mohammed Ali on 14 January 1991, as Bangladesh transitioned and restored parliamentary democracy, the newspaper became popular for its outspoken coverage of politics, corruption, and foreign policy. The 2006–2008 Bangladeshi political crisis began as a caretaker government (CTG) assumed power at the end of October 2006 following the end of term of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party administration. The BNP government increased the chief justice's retirement age in an unconstitutional way to bias the appointment of the head of the caretaker government. CTG manages the government during the interim 90-day period and parliamentary elections. Political conflict began with the alleged appointment of a Chief Advisor, a role which devolved to the President, Dr. Iajuddin Ahmed. The interim period was marked from the beginning by violent protests initiated by the Awami League named Logi Boitha Andolan, with 40 people killed and hundreds injured in the first month. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party had its own complaints about the process and the opposition.
Sheikh Fazlul Haque Moni was a Bangladeshi politician. He was one of the nephews of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father of Bangladesh. He was the founder of Mujib Bahini Bangladesh Liberation Force-BLF one of the major guerrilla forces of the Bangladesh Liberation War and also the founder of Bangladesh Awami Jubo League, the youth wing of Bangladesh Awami League.
Fazlul Quader Chowdhury was a Bengali politician who served as the 5th speaker of the National Assembly of Pakistan from East Pakistan. He belonged to Ayub Khan's Convention Muslim League. He was also the Acting President of Pakistan from time to time when Ayub Khan left the country. His elder brother Fazlul Kabir Chowdhury was the leader of the opposition in East Pakistan assembly. Quader was preceded by Maulvi Tamizuddin Khan of Awami League.
The Khelafat Majlish, also spelt Khelafat Majlis, is a far-right Islamist political party in Bangladesh. The party was founded in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, in 1989 by Deobandi scholar Azizul Haque along with Ahmad Abdul Qadir and former leaders of the National Awami Party and Tamaddun Majlish. The 15 August 1975 Bangladesh coup d'état was a military coup launched by mid ranking army officers in Bangladesh on 15 August 1975. The officers were part of a conspiracy to assassinate Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father of Bangladesh, who led the independence struggle during the Bangladesh Liberation War and later served as the first and fourth president and later in between his two presidential terms served as the second prime minister of Bangladesh from April 1971 until his assassination in August 1975. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and most of his family members were killed during the coup, with the exception of his two daughters Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana.
The Fourth Hasina ministry was the 20th cabinet of Bangladesh headed by Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina which was formed after the 2018 general election which was held on 30 December 2018. The results of the election were announced on 31 December 2018 and this led to the formation of the 11th assembly in the Jatiya Sangsad. The swearing-in ceremony was arranged in Bangabhaban in the Capital. Hasina's cabinet was staggeringly large, with 54 members.
