Stephen Wallace CVO is a Canadian retired civil servant. On 1 February 2011, he became Secretary to the Governor General of Canada and Herald Chancellor of Canada. [1] On 1 November 2011, he received his commission as Deputy of the Governor General of Canada. He retired from public service in January 2018. [2]

Wallace is a recipient of the 125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada Medal, and he was made a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order in the 2018 New Year Honours. [3]

Life and career

One of nine children from a naval family originating in the Atlantic provinces, Wallace grew up in Halifax and Ottawa, and his family is now centered near Wakefield, Quebec. He studied the arts and business administration at the University of Ottawa.

Wallace focused much of his career on international affairs and public administration. His early work as a teacher, volunteer, diplomat and aid worker concentrated mainly on Africa and Central America. Wallace spent many years with the Canadian International Development Agency, where he managed several reconstruction programs and served as the Vice-President of the Afghanistan Task Force.

His public policy assignments included the Special Joint Committee of Parliament Reviewing Canadian Foreign Policy, as well as work on civil society with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. As a senior public servant, Wallace served as Assistant Secretary of Government Operations at the Treasury Board Secretariat, and most recently as Associate Deputy Minister for the Department of Canadian Heritage prior to his appointment as Secretary to the Governor General. Melvin Samuel Cappe, is a retired Canadian civil servant and diplomat. From 2006 to 2011 he was the President and CEO of the Institute for Research on Public Policy (IRPP) in Montreal, Quebec. He was most recently Canada's High Commissioner to the United Kingdom. He had served in Canada's government since 1975 as a deputy minister of Environment Canada, Human Resources Development and Labour, as well as Clerk of the Privy Council and Secretary to the Federal Cabinet.

Ian E. Bennett was a Master of the Royal Canadian Mint. He held this position from June 12, 2006 and his mandate was extended to 2014. Prior to his appointment, Bennett held several positions within the Department of Finance including Deputy Minister from November 2004 to June 2006. He also served as Executive Director of the International Monetary Fund representing Canada, Ireland and the Caribbean countries from September 2001 to October 2004.

Richard Brian Marcel Fadden, OC is a Canadian former civil servant who was the National Security Advisor to the Prime Minister of Canada and an Associate Secretary to the Cabinet. He retired from that position on March 31, 2016. He had previously served as the Deputy Minister of National Defence from 2013 to 2015. From 2009 to 2013, he was Director of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS). He was previously the Deputy Minister of Citizenship and Immigration Canada from 2006 to 2009.

Peter Wallace is a Canadian public servant who has been the secretary of the Treasury Board of Canada since April 4, 2018. Prior to joining the Government of Canada, Wallace was the city manager for the City of Toronto from 2015 to 2018, and held senior roles in the Ontario provincial government including as secretary to the Cabinet.
