Sven Pipien (born 30 May 1967, in Hanover, Germany) is a musician best known as the bassist of the southern rock band The Black Crowes.
Sven Pipien began his musical career playing bass with Atlanta-based rock outfit Mary, My Hope. The band recorded one full-length LP in 1989 (Museum) and one EP in 1990 (Suicide Kings) and garnered enough college radio popularity to earn them opening slots on headlining tours for Love and Rockets and Jane's Addiction. [1] Their style, which included elements which would later be heard with the emergence of grunge in the early-to-mid 1990s, was out of place with much of the mainstream music scene at the time and the band split up in 1991. A compilation, Monster Is Bigger Than The Man, appeared shortly after, featuring four previously released songs and four unissued cuts. [2]
Pipien reappeared in 1997, when he replaced original bassist Johnny Colt in multi-platinum rock act The Black Crowes. He would spend the next year performing live with the band and making contributions to their fifth studio album, By Your Side , which was finally released in January 1999 after several delays. A live EP, Souled Out...Live!, would appear later in the same year, culled from the band's support tour for By Your Side.
In the Fall of 1999, The Black Crowes were tapped by Jimmy Page to be his band for a tour featuring a setlist predominantly made up of Led Zeppelin material. [3] The short tour would prove very successful for both parties and resulted in the live release, Live at the Greek , which appeared in mid-2000. The album was an early entry into the catalog of releases exclusive to the Internet and demand for it was so high, the server of its provider, MusicMaker.com, crashed for an entire day. [3]
More dates were added to the tour with Page, keeping the band booked through the majority of 2000. Pipien was let go from the band mid-tour, however, replaced by well-known session player Greg Rzab. [4]
Pipien would reappear the next year with King Bee, a Miami-based blues rock outfit, a band he would remain with until 2002. He would make no contributions to any of the band's studio output, their first album not recorded until 2003. After departing King Bee, Pipien virtually disappeared from the music scene.
When The Black Crowes ended their three-year hiatus in March 2005, they invited Pipien to rejoin the band as bassist. He accepted the invitation and remained a member of the band through their 2015 breakup, recording two studio and two live albums during his second stay.
In late 2016, following the Black Crowes' 2015 breakup, he became a founding member of the Magpie Salute, a band which features his former Black Crowes bandmates Rich Robinson and Marc Ford. [5]

The Black Crowes are an American rock band formed in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1984. Their discography includes eight studio albums, four live albums and several charting singles. The band was signed to Def American Recordings in 1989 by producer George Drakoulias and released their debut album, Shake Your Money Maker, the following year. Their follow-up, The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion, reached the top of the Billboard 200 in 1992. The albums Amorica (1994), Three Snakes and One Charm (1996), By Your Side (1999), and Lions (2001) followed, with each showing moderate popularity but failing to capture the chart successes of the band's first two albums. After a hiatus from 2002 to 2005, the band regrouped and toured for several years before releasing Warpaint in 2008, which reached number 5 on the Billboard chart.
Christopher Mark Robinson is an American musician. He founded the rock band The Black Crowes, then known as Mr. Crowe's Garden, with his brother Rich Robinson in 1984. Chris is the lead singer of The Black Crowes, and he and his brother are the only continuous members of the Crowes. He is the vocalist and rhythm guitarist for the Chris Robinson Brotherhood, which was formed in 2011 while the Black Crowes were on hiatus. Robinson is noted for his high tenor vocal range and bluesy vocal runs.

Lions is the sixth studio album by American rock band The Black Crowes. It was released in 2001 as their first album on V2 Records following their departure from Columbia, and is their only studio album to feature guitarist Audley Freed. Lions was recorded in New York City in January and February of that year, and was produced by Don Was. Bass guitar duties were shared by Rich Robinson and Was, as Greg Rzab had left the band and was not replaced until the tour that followed the release of the album.
By Your Side is the fifth studio album by American rock band The Black Crowes. It was released in early 1999 on Columbia Records, following the band's move from American Recordings, after second guitarist Marc Ford and bassist Johnny Colt had left the band in 1997. Audley Freed and Sven Pipien were hired as the new guitarist and bassist, respectively, although Rich Robinson played all the guitar parts on the album. By Your Side was recorded in New York City during the second quarter of 1998 and produced by Kevin Shirley. It comprised songs written in the studio, revised songs from pre-production and re-recorded songs from the abandoned 1997 album Band.
Richard Spencer Robinson is an American musician and founding member of the rock and roll band the Black Crowes. Along with older brother Chris Robinson, Rich formed the band in 1984 while the two were attending Walton High School in Marietta, Georgia. At age 15, Rich wrote the music for "She Talks to Angels", which became one of the band's biggest hits.

Eddie Harsch was a Canadian keyboardist and member of Detroit-based jam band Bulldog. Previous to that he was The Black Crowes' keyboardist from 1991 to 2006. Harsch was replaced on keyboards by Rob Clores and then Adam MacDougall. Harsch first joined Bulldog during The Black Crowes' hiatus, which lasted from early 2002 to early 2005. During that time, he also played bass in the Detroit Cobras. In the 1980s, Harsch was a member of James Cotton's band.
Warpaint Live is a live album by American southern rock band The Black Crowes, released on April 28, 2009. This is the first Black Crowes live album since Freak 'n' Roll in 2006 and it features live versions of the whole Warpaint album. Recorded live on March 20, 2008 at The Wiltern in Los Angeles, CA. The double CD precedes the release of the live concert DVD later in 2009.

Before the Frost...Until the Freeze is the eighth studio album by American rock band The Black Crowes. It was recorded before a live audience at Levon Helm's Woodstock, New York, studio, The Barn, in late February and early March, 2009. The album was produced by longtime band collaborator Paul Stacey and released on Silver Arrow Records. The CD itself is designed to have the appearance of a vinyl record. Originally, only the Before the Frost portion of the double album was available on CD, and the CD purchase came with a code allowing download of the Until the Freeze portion from the Black Crowes website. A vinyl version was also released, featuring all the same songs but in a different running order. Before the Frost...Until the Freeze is the band's last album of original material to feature longtime drummer Steve Gorman and keyboardist Adam MacDougall.

Recorded during a five-night run in New York City (NYC) in their supporting tour for the 2010 album Croweology and released as vinyl or download. It includes live recordings from the band's 2010 NYC performances and four covers: "Hot Burrito #1" and "Hot Burrito #2" from The Flying Burrito Brothers, Little Feat's "Willin'" and Bob Dylan's "Tonight I'll Be Staying Here with You".
The Magpie Salute was an American rock band formed in 2016 by the Black Crowes guitarist Rich Robinson. The band also includes former Black Crowes members Marc Ford and Sven Pipien and Moke singer/songwriter John Hogg, as well as Rich Robinson band members Matt Slocum and Joe Magistro.
High Water I is the debut studio album by American rock band The Magpie Salute, released August 10, 2018 on Eagle Records. Produced by leader and guitarist Rich Robinson, it served as the follow-up to their self-titled live album released one year prior. The band's follow-up High Water II was released October 18, 2019.
