Taraz ; also historically known as Talas) is a city and the administrative center of Jambyl Region in Kazakhstan, located on the Talas (Taraz) River in the south of the country near the border with Kyrgyzstan. Its total area is 13,406 km2 (5,176 sq mi). The resident population of the region was 270,994 as of January 2021. The region borders Kyrgyzstan, and is very near to Uzbekistan. Jambyl also borders three other provinces: Karaganda Region, Turkistan Region and Almaty Region. The total area is 144,200 square kilometres (55,700 sq mi). The province borders Lake Balkhash to its northeast. The province was named after the Kazakh akyn Jambyl Jabayev.

Rustam Musadinovich Kiknadze is a Kazakhstani serial killer and rapist who murdered three women over twenty days in the Jambyl Region in 2020. His case garnered great controversy among locals, as he was a known violent offender who had previous convictions for a double murder and raping underage children, in addition to his relatively lenient sentence of 26 years for his latest killings.

The 1971 Jambyl earthquake was one of the major earthquakes in Kazakhstan. It occurred in Jambyl on May 10, 1971, with a magnitude of 5.3. In some parts of the city and nearby areas the vibrations were manifested with intensity of up to 7 points. More than 28,000 buildings and structures, including 16,500 private houses were damaged. There is no information about fatalities.

The Electoral district No. 15 is a single-mandate territorial constituency in Kazakhstan, represented in the lower chamber Mäjilis of the Parliament. It is one of two constituencies within the Jambyl Region as its seat is centered in Taraz, which includes the regional districts of Jambyl, Jualy, and Talas.
