Brigette Peterson is an American politician serving as the current mayor of Gilbert,Arizona. [1] [2]
Peterson is a 1982 graduate of Hudson Catholic High School in Hudson,Massachusetts. [3] She moved to Gilbert in 1995 and in 2000 she applied and was appointed as an alternate for Gilberts planning commission. [4] In 2014,she was one of seven candidates competing for four at-large seats on the Gilbert Town Council. [5] [6] Peterson was previously a member of town council [7] and the town's planning commission. [8] [9] In 2013 the town of Gilbert honored Peterson with the Volunteer of the Year award. [10] In 2018,she had served as the Vice-mayor of Gilbert,Arizona. [11] Peterson was elected mayor in the 2020 election and has served since 2021. [12] As a comparatively underfunded candidate,her campaign (during the COVID-19 pandemic) relied heavily on social media. [13] In 2023 Peterson testified against a proposed state law that would strip cities of some zoning authority. [14]

Incorporated on July 6,1920,Gilbert was once known as the "Hay Shipping Capital of the World". The population was 267,918 at the 2020 census,and was estimated to be 275,346 in 2022. It is the fifth-largest municipality in Arizona,and the fourth-largest in the Phoenix metro area. It covers an area of nearly 69 square miles (179 km2).

The school was founded in 1959. On March 29,2009,parents and students were told that the high school would close in June,after graduating its fiftieth class. On June 4,2009,the school officially closed. The former Hudson Catholic High School building was demolished in 2015.

Early in her initial campaign Daniels came out against Big League Dreams in Gilbert by saying "I have no problem with public/private partnerships but the way Big League Dreams went down was absolutely devastating. It was a great idea but was done efficiently? No." In May 2009,after a runoff,Jenn Daniels emerged as the top of what started as a 7-person race for two seats on town council.
