Daniel Fred Kidega is a Ugandan politician and former Speaker of the East African Legislative Assembly, in office from December 2014 until June 2017. [1] As of August 2020, he served as the chairman of Atiak Sugar Factory, in Amuru District, in which the Uganda government owned 40 percent shareholding. [2]

Early life and education

He was born at St. Mary's Hospital Lacor, in Gulu City on 10 December 1973. He attended Christ the King Demonstration School in Gulu for his elementary schooling. His father, Dusman Okee Sr. (5 January 1942 – 3 January 2016), is also the father of Norbert Mao. [3] He transferred to Ntare School in Mbarara for his high school education. He studied at Kyambogo University, at that time called Kyambogo Polytechnic. He graduated from Kyambogo with a Diploma in Biochemistry. He then joined Uganda Christian University in Mukono, graduating with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree. Later, he studied at Lund University in Lund, Sweden, obtaining a Diploma in International Trade and a Master of Science in International Trade. [4]

Career

Kidega was a student leader in the 1990s, rising to the rank of Chairman of the National Youth Council. He worked as the Private Secretary to the Vice President of Uganda from 2000 to 2001. Daniel Fred Kidega was a member of President Museveni's national campaign taskforce in 2001. He served as a Member of Parliament in the Seventh Parliament from 2001 until 2006, as a National Youth Representative. He is a member of the National Executive Council (NEC), the highest organ of the ruling National Resistance Movement political party. He was a member of President Museveni's national campaign team in 2011. He was first elected to the EALA in 2007 and was re-elected for a second term in 2012. [5]

On 19 December 2014 he was elected unopposed as the fourth Speaker of the East African Legislative Assembly, replacing Margaret Zziwa of Uganda, who was impeached by the Assembly for "alleged impunity, incompetence, intimidation of members, among other reasons". [6] He served the remainder of his predecessor's term until June 2017. [7]

He was appointed to this position by Yoweri Museveni, the president of the Republic of Uganda. This appointment drew immense criticism from the Democratic Party, an opposition party he is currently serving as president. It was seen as a move by President Museveni to tame the Party and clip its wings to criticize his government.

The highway links Entebbe International Airport, the country's largest civilian and military airport, to Kampala, the country's capital and largest metropolitan area. Originally, the highway was planned for commissioning in 2016, but because of the delayed works, commissioning was done on 15 June 2018 by Uganda's sitting president, Yoweri Museveni. Recently, the Uganda Minister for Works and Transport, Gen. Katumba Wamala launched the toll point at Kajjansi along Kampala–Entebbe Road.

Jacob L'Okori Oulanyah was a Ugandan agricultural economist, lawyer, and politician, who served as the Speaker of the 11th Parliament of Uganda since 2021 until 2022. He was elected to that position on 24 May 2021, after defeating his tenacious rival the then incumbent Speaker Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga. He served as Deputy Speaker of the Ugandan parliament, from May 2011 until May 2021. Oulanyah was also the member of parliament representing the Omoro County constituency, Omoro District, Acholi sub-region, in the Uganda's Northern Region.

Nusura Tiperu Omar is a Ugandan diplomat,politician and former legislator. She currently serves as the ambassador of Uganda to Turkey. She was appointed to that position in December 2021.

Margaret Nantongo Zziwa is a Ugandan politician and legislator. She served as the Speaker of the 3rd East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) in Arusha, Tanzania. She was elected to serve in that capacity in June 2012. She was impeached and voted out of office on 17 December 2014, on the basis of misconduct and abuse of office, but was later awarded compensation for illegal removal.

Fred Mukasa Mbidde is a Ugandan lawyer, human-rights activist, mass communication specialist, motivational speaker and politician. He is an elected member of the 3rd East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), representing the Republic of Uganda. He has been in this office since June 2012. He serves on three EALA committees: the Committee on Communication, Trade and Investments; the Committee on Legal, Rules and Privileges; and the Committee on Regional Affairs and Conflict Resolution. He is the chairperson of the Committee on Communication, Trade and Investments.

Atiak Sugar Factory Limited (ASFL), also Atiak Sugar Factory, or Atiak Sugar Limited, is a sugar manufacturing company in Uganda.

Julius Wandera Maganda, also Julius Maganda, is a Ugandan politician. He was the State Minister for East African Affairs in the Ugandan Cabinet. He was appointed to that position on 6 June 2016, serving there until May 2021.

Uganda is the largest producer of granular brown sugar in the East African Community, accounting for about 500,000 metric tonnes annually as of May 2017. By 2021, national annual sugar output had increased to about 600,000 metric tonnes of brown sugar and 60,000 metric tonnes of industrial sugar. In October 2022, it was projected that the country would produce 822,000 metric tonnes in calendar year 2022. Of that, about 720,000 metric tonnes would be brown table sugar and about 102,000 metric tonnes would be white industrial sugar.
