Gaycation (also known as Gaycation with Ellen Page) is a 2016 American television documentary series hosted by Elliot Page [lower-alpha 1] and Ian Daniel. The series premiered on 2 March 2016 on Viceland as part of its new programming launch. The series explores LGBTQ cultures around the world, as Page and Daniel meet different people during their travels and hear their stories.

Development

Gaycation was introduced as part of the programming launch of Vice Media's new channel, Viceland. [1] The series was originally conceived when Spike Jonze, as the co-president of Viceland, approached Elliot Page [lower-alpha 1] and requested input on possible show ideas for the new channel; they suggested a travel show with an LGBT perspective. [2] After Jonze recommended that Page be accompanied by a companion during the series, Page suggested Ian Daniel, a personal friend who had experience as an art curator and worked as the director of artistic programs at The Civilians Theater Company, to be brought on as a co-host. [3]

The series was renewed for a second season in 2016. [4]

Production

Filming for the first season began June 2015, in New York City. [5] [ better source needed ] Notably, Page's attempt to interview Ted Cruz at the Iowa State Fair was recorded by bystanders and went viral; [6] [7] the exchange would appear in the United States episode of the series. Each of the episodes were made available for online viewing shortly after each episode's premiere.

Filming for season 2 began in March 2016. [8] A special episode aired on August 24, 2016, focusing on the aftermath of the mass shooting that occurred at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida. [9] The second season began airing on September 7, 2016. [9] [10] In January 2017, the series was nominated for a GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Reality Program. [11]

The 28th GLAAD Media Awards was the 2017 annual presentation of the GLAAD Media Awards, presented by GLAAD honoring the 2016 season. UNHhhh is an American comedy web series starring drag queens Trixie Mattel and Katya Zamolodchikova. In the series, Trixie and Katya discuss a topic humorously in front of a green screen. UNHhhh premiered on March 25, 2016, one year after Mattel and Zamolodchikova appeared in the seventh season of RuPaul's Drag Race. The show is aired through World Of Wonder's YouTube channel, as well as through its video-on-demand service WOW Presents Plus. Netflix has contributed substantially to LGBTQ representation in animation. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, pansexual, asexual and transgender characters have appeared in various animated series, and some animated films, on the streaming platform. GLAAD described Netflix as a company taking "impressive strides in viewership and impact," when it came to LGBTQ representation. Scholars have stated that LGBTQ characters on streaming services, such as Netflix, "made more displays of affection" than on broadcast networks.

Cartoon Network, an American TV channel which launched in 1992, and Adult Swim, its adult-oriented nighttime programming block which launched in 2001, has regularly featured lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) characters in its programming.

The 33rd GLAAD Media Awards is a 2022 annual presentation of the GLAAD Media Awards, presented by GLAAD honoring the 2021 media season. It was held on April 2, 2022 in Los Angeles and was later held on May 6, 2022 in New York City. The awards honor films, television shows, video games, musicians and works of journalism that fairly, accurately and inclusively represent the LGBT community and issues relevant to the community. GLAAD announced the 198 nominees split across 28 categories on January 19, 2022 on TikTok. For the first time since 2019, the winners were announced in an in-person ceremony. Michaela Jaé Rodriguez, Kacey Musgraves, Judith Light and Wilson Cruz received special recognition awards for their advocacy.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Trixie and Katya</span> American comedy duo

Trixie and Katya is a comedy duo consisting of drag queens Trixie Mattel and Katya Zamolodchikova. The two have been known for their individual careers as entertainers and often as a popular double act. They first met as contestants on the seventh season of RuPaul's Drag Race and quickly became audience favourites, developing an even larger audience as they began to appear together in December 2015 on YouTube.
