Ihiala

Ihiala is a city in Nigeria, located in the southern part of Anambra State and within the region known as Igboland. It has long served as the local administrative capital of Ihiala Local Government Area. The Local Government Area has a population of about 430,800.

Ihiala is the largest city in Ihiala Local Government Area which also consists of several other towns like Amorka, Azia, Lilu, Okija, Mbosi, Isseke, Orsumoghu, Ubuluisuzor and Uli. [2] It lies in the agricultural belt of the state.

Ihiala is currently represented in the Federal House of Representatives by Honorable Ifeanyi Chudy Momah [3] The Current Oluoha of Ihiala (Traditional Ruler) is Igwe Thomas Ikenna Amuta Obidiegwu.

Economy

The Ihiala LGA's economy heavily relies on agriculture, and the region is well-known for growing a variety of crops, including vegetables, cassava, yams, and cocoyams. Additionally, the region has a thriving commercial sector and is home to a number of marketplaces, including the Nkwor Ihiala and Nkwogbe markets. Numerous banks, hotels, and other private and public institutions are located in Ihiala LGA. [4]

Boundaries

Ihiala region is located in the Southwest of Anambra State and to the Northwest, it shares a border with Nnewi Local Government. To the Northeast and the East, with IMO State and to the west with Ekwusigo Local Government. Also to the South is located the Delta State. [5]

Climate

In Ihiala, the rainy season is warm, oppressive, and even overcast while the dry season is hot, muggy, and partly cloudy. Over the course of the year, the temperature typically varies from 67 °F to 87 °F and is rarely below 59 °F or above 90 °F. [6] [7]

Mgbidi is the headquarters of Oru West, a local government area of Imo State in southeastern Nigeria. It is located at latitude 5.37° N and longitude 6.57° E. It was the headquarters of the Oru Local Government Area before its division into two local government areas, Oru West and Oru East, in 1996 under the presidency of Sani Abacha.

Okija is the largest town in Ihiala LGA of Anambra State in Southeast Nigeria. The town is the oldest of all the towns in Ihiala local government area, and one of the biggest towns in Igboland. The people of Okija are predominantly Christians. Okija is the home to Madonna University and Legacy University. Bordered in the east by Ihembosi and Ukpor cities, within the west by olu or Ogbakubara, within the north by Ozubulu and within the south by Ihiala. In Okija, the Ulasi River on its flow to the Atlantic, joins Okposi river one of its tributaries.

Uga is a town in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State, Nigeria. It is 13 km South East of Igbo-Ukwu, 12 km South of Ekwulobia, and 45 km South of Awka, the Anambra State Capital. It has four (4) communities namely : Umueze, Oka, Umuoru and Awarasi. It has recognised landmarks and tourist attractions such as the "Obizi Uga", a natural spring and a spectacular scenery which was the site of an ancient tale in the Uga oral tradition. Uga is the site of an annual traditional celebration known as the "OBUOFOR" festival held every 26 December. Uga has one of the largest markets in the Aguata local government area known as "ORIE" which supports the economic activities of the local community and other surrounding towns.

Amorka is a town in Ihiala local government area of Anambra State of Nigeria. It is located along the Onitsha-Owerri Expressway, bordered by Mgbidi [Imo State] to the South, Ibiasoegbe to the East, Ozara to the West, and Uli to the North. Amorka is the main hub for Biafran airport during the civil war, and Biafran warlord dim Emeka Odumegwu Ojukwu has a secret bunker in Amorka. Amorka has lots of politicians, rich business moguls, many legal practitioners.

Orashi River, is a river of the lower Niger River basin, and a tributary of Oguta Lake, southeastern Nigeria. Urashi takes off, 183 m above mean sea level, from the rocks in Ezeama community of Dikenafai, Imo State. Described as a lifeline to Ideato South communities, Orashi stream serves as an all purpose river for drinking, washing and many others to communities such as Umulewe, Umuchima and Ntueke in the area.

Okija Shrine or Ogwuwu Akpu is a dreaded shrine located in Okija, a town in Ihiala local government of Anambra State, Eastern Nigeria. On 3 August 2004, the shrine was invaded by a team of policemen led by former Anambra State Commissioner of Police Felix Ogbaudu who arrested over 40 native doctors, keepers and attendants. Over 70 dead human bodies and skulls were discovered in the premise of the shrine.

Anambra State House of Assembly is the Legislative Branch of the Anambra State Government created in 1991 when Anambra State was created. It is a unicameral body with 30 elected members who represent 30 constituencies. As of June 2019, Uchenna Okafor is the Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly.

Ifeanyi Chudy Momah is a Nigerian lawyer and businessman currently serving in the House of Representatives and represents Ihiala Federal Constituency, Anambra State. He is the chairman of the House Committee on Federal Capital Territory Judiciary and a member of the Peoples Democratic Party.

Incumbent APGA Governor Willie Obiano was term-limited and could not seek a third consecutive term. APGA nominee, former Central Bank Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, retained the office for APGA with a 24% win over PDP nominee, former Transcorp CEO Valentine Ozigbo.

The 2019 Nigerian House of Representatives elections in Anambra State was held on February 23, 2019, to elect members of the House of Representatives to represent Anambra State, Nigeria.

Anambra South senatorial district in Anambra State, Nigeria is one of the three senatorial districts in the State. It has seven local governments areas. These are: Aguata(300PU), Ekwusigo(175PU), Ihiala(278PU), Nnewi North(198PU), Nnewi south(295PU), Orumba North(231PU), Orumba South(192PU) totaling 1,669 polling units.
