Israeli military decorations are the decorations awarded to soldiers in the Israel Defense Forces who exhibit extraordinary bravery and courage. Its decorations consist of the Medal of Valor (the highest decoration in the IDF), the Medal of Courage, and the Medal of Distinguished Service. It also includes the Citations (Tzalash), which are awarded in four classes.

Contents

Two soldiers share the title of being the most decorated soldier of the IDF: Captain Nechemya Cohen (1943–1967), and General Ehud Barak (formerly Chief of Staff, later Prime Minister). [1]

According to Israel Ministry of Defence, "'Campaign ribbons' are ribbons commemorating a person's participation in war, campaign and combat from the establishment of the State of Israel up to the present day. These ribbons are awarded by authorisation of government, the IDF decorations Act and regulations set up by the Minister of Defense." [2]

According to Israel Ministry of Defence, "'Awards for military contribution towards the establishment of the State of Israel' and decorations are awarded by authorisation of government and a ministerial committee for symbols and ceremonies, with the exception of the Nazi Fighter Ribbon which is awarded according to the 'Yad Vashem' regulation in the Remembrance and Holocaust Act, and in addition by the 'status of the Second World War II' Act of 2000." The Citation Star was a Department of War personal valor decoration issued as a ribbon device which was first established by the United States Congress on July 9, 1918. When awarded, a 316-inch (4.8 mm) silver star was placed on the suspension ribbon and service ribbon of the World War I Victory Medal to denote a Citation (certificate) for "Gallantry In Action" was awarded to a soldier, or to a marine or attached to the Army's Second Division, American Expeditionary Forces. The Citation Star was replaced in 1932 with the introduction of the Silver Star Medal.

Itzhak Brik is an Israeli IDF General (reserve). He served in the Armored Corps as a brigade, division and troops commander and served as the commander of the IDF military colleges. He fought as a reserve company commander in the Yom Kippur War and was decorated with the Medal of Courage:

Description of the act: Major Yitzhak Barik served as a tank commander throughout the war. In the Battle of Tishrei 1973 his tank was hit, and he was wounded and badly burned in the face; despite this, he refused to be evacuated, and continued to command his unit. B in Tishrei 1973 after the failure of the attack on the Fardan bridge, he returned and charged towards the canal to rescue tanks and casualties as he organized the rest of the force and stopped the Egyptian counterattack. Until the end of the fighting, he continued to command his unit, replacing seven tanks who were hurt and serves as an example in his courage, his adherence to his mission and his leadership ability. For this act he was awarded the decoration of courage.
