Quarterback is an American television documentary series developed for Netflix. The National Football League (NFL) and Netflix partnered to develop the series, while NFL Films, 2PM Productions, and Omaha Productions produced the series. [1] [2]

Development and release

The NFL and Netflix announced the docu-series on February 22, 2023. [1] The announcement of the series followed the success of various sports documentary series on Netflix, beginning with their Drive to Survive series; Netflix also launched the tennis- and golf-themed series Break Point and Full Swing earlier in 2023. [4] [5] [6]

The NFL had not done business with Netflix prior to Quarterback. [2] Producers for the series include NFL Films, Omaha Productions, and 2PM Productions. 2PM Productions is Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes' production studio, [1] while Omaha Productions is the production studio of former NFL quarterback Peyton Manning. [7] Manning will executive produce the series along with Ross Ketover, Pat Kelleher, and Keith Cossrow of NFL Films. [6]

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins, and Atlanta Falcons quarterback Marcus Mariota are the three quarterbacks featured in the series. [8] [9] The three quarterbacks wore a microphone during every game of the 2022 NFL season, marking the first time the NFL allowed such access. [10] This audio is used in the series. [8] Netflix was also given special access to Mahomes during the season, which culminated in him winning Super Bowl LVII and being named the game's MVP. [11] Despite this access, Mahomes' private meetings with Chiefs head coach Andy Reid were not allowed to be filmed. [12] The Vikings finished the season having won the NFC North, while Mariota is documented during his first (and only) season with the Falcons. [10] The production of the season also followed the personal lives of the quarterbacks. [12]

Netflix initially ordered one season of the series. [6] [8] In June, a trailer for the series was released, confirming it would premiere on July 12. [13] In July, Manning confirmed that the series had been renewed for a second season. [14] However, in September, Julian Sancton of The Hollywood Reporter wrote that Netflix had not yet officially greenlit a second season. [15] Manning was also reported expressing difficulties in finding subjects for a second season. [15] As a result, Omaha Productions ultimately pivoted to following wide receivers, showcasing them in a new series titled Receiver . [16]

Reception

Writing for CNN, Brian Lowry commented on Mahomes' presence in the series, stating "not all play callers are created equal, with Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes easily providing the best and most entertaining company, eclipsing the mere mortals who flesh out the Netflix docuseries." [17] Lowry added that Cousins and Mariota "even with the intense and far-reaching access, seldom feel like they're opening up much more than the standard 'We're just trying to win ballgames' cliches." [17]

Brady Langmann of Esquire offered an opposing opinion, writing that "the storytelling grows inversely complex with each player's skill level," calling the series' "standout". [18] Langmann also wrote that "the highly curated version of Patrick Mahomes we see in Quarterback isn't all that interesting," and added "this isn't Last Chance U , where we're gifted a nuanced portrait of every player." [18] For The Athletic , Josh Kendall wrote that "Everybody in Quarterback comes out looking pretty good. That's kind of the point. Hagiography packaged as sports documentary. It is Netflix to its core — glossy and glitzy with the right music coming in at the right places". Kendall added that the show was "clean fun", opining it is "clean in the sense that it's safe for most audiences outside of Patrick Mahomes' potty mouth. And clean in the sense that it's sanitized." [19] Polygon 's Austen Goslin gave a mixed review, calling the show "almost-great". Goslin opined that "Quarterback is in a complicated position right now. For all its issues, it's still a pretty entertaining show that has moments of big payoff for fans who only understand the 2022 season on a surface level. Mahomes breaking down a game-winning drive or seeing Cousins fight through a myriad of injuries is fascinating when they narrate it themselves. But those moments are the exception right now, rather than the norm". [20]

<i>Last Chance U</i> Documentary series about American football

Last Chance U is an American documentary television series that is produced by and premiered on Netflix. The six-episode first season explores the football program at East Mississippi Community College, which features several collegiate athletes that have had trouble in their lives and struggled with finding structure. The players are then required to perform at the junior college (JUCO) level, under the stewardship of coach Buddy Stephens, in order to prove themselves and return to Division I.

The Match is a series of exhibition match play golf challenge matches that began in 2018. The event features major professional golfers or other notable athletes facing each other in a head-to-head competition. The format has varied throughout the run of the event; in all of the events, sports entertainment elements were included, particularly with the inclusion of sports betting elements in that the contestants wager portions of their prize on side bets during the contest. TNT Sports has televised all eight iterations of the event. Since 2020, two iterations of The Match have been held each year, one in the spring or early summer and the other (usually) on Thanksgiving weekend. The Thanksgiving contest features professional golfers, often paired with an athlete from another sport; the spring contests, taking place during the PGA Tour season, normally consist solely of non-golfers, which to date have consisted of current or retired American football and basketball players competing during their respective sports' offseasons.

The season began on September 8, 2022, with the defending Super Bowl LVI champion Los Angeles Rams falling to Buffalo in the NFL Kickoff Game, and ended on January 8, 2023. The playoffs started on January 14 and concluded with Super Bowl LVII, the league's championship game, at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, on February 12, with Kansas City defeating Philadelphia.

It was held at Allegiant Stadium in Paradise, Nevada, the Intermountain Healthcare Performance Center in Henderson, Nevada, and Bear's Best Golf Course in Las Vegas, Nevada on February 2 and 5, 2023. Voting began on November 15, 2022, and the rosters were announced on December 21, 2022.
