In July 2019, cricket was not included on Russia's list of official sports. [8] This means that Cricket Russia did not receive government funding over the year. On 18 July 2021, Russia was suspended due to continued non-compliance with ICC Membership Criteria, was ordered to demonstrate compliance before the time of the next AGM or face having its membership of ICC terminated with immediate effect. [10]

An ICC statement explained that Russia’s 2021 suspension was the result of a failure to comply with ICC membership criteria dating back to July 2019 and that membership had been "terminated" following a failure to overcome those issues. [11]

On July 18, 2019, the Russian Ministry of Sports excluded cricket from recognized sports in Russia due to the insufficient number of regional branches (20 available with 48 required). [12] In June 2022, it was planned that the International Cricket Council would approve the membership of federations from Russia and Ukraine, but after the outbreak of war in Ukraine, this issue regarding Russia was removed from the agenda. In October 2023, cricket was included in the program of the 2028 Olympic Games, but Russia will not be able to qualify for these Games. [13]
