The 1862 Kansas gubernatorial election was held on 4 November 1862 in order to elect the Governor of Kansas. Republican nominee and incumbent member of the Kansas House of Representatives Thomas Carney defeated National Union nominee and incumbent member of the Kansas Legislature William Ross Wagstaff. On election day, 4 November 1862, Republican nominee Thomas Carney won the election by a margin of 4,534 votes against his opponent National Union nominee William Ross Wagstaff, thereby retaining Republican control over the office of Governor. Carney was sworn in as the 2nd Governor of Kansas on 12 January 1863. [3]

William Carney was an American politician from New York who served in the Suffolk County, New York Legislature and United States House of Representatives as a member of the Conservative and Republican parties. He is the only registered member of the Conservative Party of New York State to be elected to the United States House of Representatives. He is one of two members of the Conservative Party to be elected to the United States Congress along with James L. Buckley, who was elected to the United States Senate from New York's Class I seat in 1970.
