The 1936 United States Senate elections coincided with the reelection of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The Great Depression continued and voters backed progressive candidates favoring Roosevelt's New Deal in races across the country. Kennedy serving as the nominee for 1960 who served as the 35th President from January 1961 until his assassination in Dallas, Texas in Nov. 1963, defeated candidates Lyndon B. Johnson later becoming the nominee for 1964 by succeeding JFK as the 36th President from his assassination of President Kennedy in 1963 until Jan. 1969, and Hubert Humphrey becoming the nominee for 1968 who succeeded LBJ as the 38th Vice-President from January 1965 until January 1969.
