On 25 May 2018, a serious collision occurred between a bus, which was travelling from Lira to Kampala, and a tractor, in the Kiryandongo district of Uganda. The incident took place along the Lira-Kampala highway. At least 22 people, including four children were killed. [1] [3] According to authorities, the crash occurred at around 8:00 pm in Nanda village, approximately 12 km (7.5 mi) from Karuma, Kiryandongo District. [4]

The commuter bus collided with the rear of the tractor; this impact subsequently caused the bus to careen and roll, resulting in a further collision with an oncoming articulated lorry, which was transporting crates of beer. [2]

The tractor, which was driving without lights [2] at night, was largely cited as the cause of the accident. [1]

Aftermath

The government declared three days of mourning, and president Yoweri Museveni directed that the families of those who perished in the accident be compensated with USh  5,000,000/= for each family and those who were critically injured would receive 3,000,000/= each. [5] [6]

The Konginkangas bus disaster was a major road traffic crash on March 19, 2004, outside the village of Konginkangas in Äänekoski, Central Finland. At 02:08 local time, a bus transporting 38 passengers, most of them youths, to the Rukatunturi skiing center for an alpine ski trip crashed into a full-trailer truck carrying heavy paper rolls weighing about 61.5 tonnes total. <span class="mw-page-title-main">Marhanets train accident</span> Locomotive accident

The Marhanets train accident occurred on 12 October 2010, at Marhanets, Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, Ukraine when a train collided with a passenger bus on a railroad level crossing. 43 people were reported dead and nine injured. The bus driver, whose actions allegedly caused the collision, was killed in the accident as well. The collision was the worst single road accident in Ukraine's history by number of victims.

The Manfalut railway accident occurred on 17 November 2012 when a school bus, which was carrying about 70 school children between four and six years old, was hit by a train on a rail crossing near Manfalut, Egypt, 350 km south of the Egyptian capital Cairo. At least 50 children and the bus driver died in the crash, and about 17 people were injured. Witnesses reported that barriers at the crossing were not closed when the crash occurred.

At least 53 people were killed and 23 others injured in a head-on collision between a bus and a truck in Ghana on 18 February 2016. Five children were among the wounded. The government-operated bus was heading to Tamale when it collided head-on with the cargo truck, which was carrying tomatoes, near the town of Kintampo on Wednesday evening. A regional police spokesman said: “It was very serious ... we had to use chainsaws to cut through parts of the mangled bus to get bodies and survivors out. The police affirmed it was one of the worst road accidents in Ghana in years. Even if the cause of the accident is unknown, some sources said that it could have been a problem of brakes, but speeding could also have been the cause. It seems the bus was overloaded, carrying more than the maximum of 63 passengers.

On April 6, 2018, sixteen people were killed and thirteen were injured when a northbound coach bus struck a westbound semi-trailer truck near Armley, Saskatchewan, Canada. The driver of the semi-truck had failed to yield at a flashing stop sign at the intersection of Highways 35 and 335. The semi-trailer was travelling at a speed of approximately 100 km/h (62 mph). Most of the deceased and injured were players from the Humboldt Broncos, a junior ice hockey team from Humboldt, Saskatchewan, which plays in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL).

A school bus crash occurring on September 21, 1989 in Alton, Texas, in the Rio Grande Valley region, resulted in the deaths of 21 junior and senior high school students by drowning or causes related to being asphyxiated. A bottling truck collided with the school bus, causing the bus to enter a caliche pit filled with water. The driver of the truck was acquitted of negligent homicide charges. The payoffs from lawsuits compensating for the deaths of the students caused division in the Alton community. A middle school that was built in Alton was named in honor of the deceased.
