Bob Boland (born 7 January 1938) nicknamed "Bolo" is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer and coach who played for the Balmain Tigers and Penrith Panthers.
Boland made his debut for Balmain Tigers in 1957. Boland played with the club for 11 seasons and was a member of the Balmain sides who played in the 1964 and 1966 grand final defeats against St George. In 1968, Boland moved out west to join the newly admitted club Penrith Panthers where he played for three seasons before retiring. [2]
After joining Penrith, Boland took on the role as captain-coach, but after retirement became the full-time non-playing coach. Boland held the position until he was terminated by the club at the end of the 1972 season. Boland's time as coach was not as successful as his playing career only winning 35% of games played. In 1976, Boland moved to Nambucca Heads and coached the Nambucca Roosters.
In 2016, Boland spoke about his playing career saying,
“I used to go to the movies or out around town and see the old Balmain players – and you look up to them ... when they said hello it gave you a bit of a lift, “When I started to play, I became the person people looked up to". “I used to get the tram to work and if I had a good game, everyone would want to sit next to me. If I had a shit game – I’d be all alone". [3]
The Wests Tigers are an Australian professional rugby league football team, based in the Inner West and South West Sydney. They have competed in the National Rugby League since being formed at the end of the 1999 NRL season as a joint-venture club between the Balmain Tigers and the Western Suburbs Magpies. The Wests Tigers started playing in the 2000 NRL season and they won their maiden premiership in 2005. It is one of only two clubs that has never lost a Grand Final in which it has participated. The club also won the World Sevens in 2004.
Mark Bradley Geyer is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s. An Australian international and New South Wales State of Origin representative second-rower, he is a rugby league media identity. Geyer's club career was played primarily with Penrith, with whom he won a premiership in 1991, as well as the Balmain Tigers and the Western Reds. He is also the brother of fellow former professional rugby league footballer Matt Geyer.
Ivan Cleary is a Australian professional rugby league coach who is the head coach of the Penrith Panthers in the NRL and a former professional rugby league footballer who played as a fullback and centre in the 1990s and 2000s.
Scott Sattler is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer who played during the 1990s and 2000s, later becoming the Football Manager of the Gold Coast Titans. A Queensland State of Origin representative lock, he played his club football for the Gold Coast Chargers from 1992 to 1993 as well as a second spell with the club between 1997 and 1998. He also played for the Eastern Suburbs Roosters in 1994, the South Queensland Crushers between 1995 and 1996, the Penrith Panthers between 1999 and 2003 and one season with the Wests Tigers in 2004. He is the son of former player John Sattler.
Ronald William Willey (1929−2004) was an Australian rugby league footballer and coach. He was a representative for the Australian national side. Post-playing, Willey had a long and successful first grade and State representative coaching career.
Steve Georgallis is a Greek professional rugby league football coach and former player who is currently an assistant coach for the North Queensland Cowboys in the National Rugby League (NRL) and the head coach of the Greece national rugby league team.
The 1988 NSWRL season was the 81st season of professional rugby league football in Australia, and saw the first expansion of the New South Wales Rugby League Premiership outside the borders of New South Wales, and another expansion outside of Sydney, with the addition of three new teams: the Brisbane Broncos, Newcastle Knights and Gold Coast-Tweed Giants. The largest NSWRL premiership yet, sixteen clubs competed during the 1988 season, with the J J Giltinan Shield for minor premiers going to Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks. The finals culminated in a grand final for the Winfield Cup between the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs and Balmain Tigers. This season NSWRL teams also competed for the 1988 Panasonic Cup.
