Subdivisions

Kuwait is divided into 6 governorates ( muhafazah ). The governorates are further subdivided into areas. The governorate is headed by a Governor appointed by a ministerial decree for a period of 4 years which can be renewed upon the proposal of the Prime Minister.

History

The beginning of the formation of governorates in the State of Kuwait started back in 1962 with the Emiri decree No. 6 which divided the Kuwait into three governorates i.e. Al Asimah Governorate, Ḩawallī Governorate and Al Aḩmadi Governorate. Later, Jahra Governorate, Farwaniya Governorate and Mubarak Al-Kabeer Governorate were formed in 1979, 1988 and 1999 respectively.

Yarmouk is an area of Kuwait City in the Al Asimah Governorate in Kuwait. Divided into four blocks, its main dwellers have moved to the area from Al-Faiha as their families grew. Its main street is called Abdul-Aziz Bin-Baz Street which extends from the entrance and the Fourth-Ring Road all the way to the other side. It is also one of the most prestigious suburbs in Kuwait, alongside other suburbs such as Nuzha, Shuwaikh and Dahia Abdullah Al Salem. Its population is 25,000.

Tartus Governorate, also transliterated as Tartous Governorate, is one of the 14 governorates of Syria. The Kuwait Governorate was the 19th governorate of Iraq established in the aftermath of the invasion of Kuwait by Iraq in 1990. It was preceded by the brief puppet state of the Republic of Kuwait. The Kuwait Governorate consisted of most of the occupied Kuwaiti territory, with the exclusion of the northern areas which became the Saddamiyat al-Mitla' District. Saddam Hussein's relative, Ali Hassan al-Majid, became the governor of this province.

Hawally is an area in the Hawalli Governorate, located in the State of Kuwait.
