Orville Vernon Burton is a professor of history at Clemson University,the director of its Clemson CyberInstitute,and an author. [1] He formerly served as director of the Institute for Computing in Humanities,Arts,and Social Science (CHASS) and professor of history and sociology at the University of Illinois. [2] He is also a senior research scientist at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications,where he is associate director for humanities and social sciences.
Burton has authored more than a hundred articles and wrote or edited fourteen books. His books include In My Father's House Are Many Mansions:Family and Community in Edgefield,South Carolina that was the subject of sessions at the Southern Historical Association and the Social Science History Association's annual meetings. It was also submitted for a Pulitzer. He also wrote The Age of Lincoln,winner of the 2007 Chicago Tribune Heartland Prize for non-fiction. [3] With civil rights lawyer Armand Derfner in 2021,Burton published Justice Deferred:Race and the Supreme Court,a lengthy survey of race-related cases on the US Supreme Court. [4]
Burton was born in Royston,Georgia and grew up in Ninety Six,South Carolina. He received a B.A. in 1969 for his undergraduate studies at Furman University and received his Ph.D. in 1976 in American History from Princeton University.
Burton was selected nationwide as the 1999 U.S. Research and Doctoral University Professor of the Year (presented by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education). [5] He received the American Historical Association’s Eugene Asher Distinguished Teacher Award for 2003. [6] Within the University of Illinois,Burton has won teaching awards at the department,school,college,and campus levels and received the 2006 Campus Award for Excellence in Public Engagement from the University of Illinois.

Benjamin Ryan Tillman was a politician of the Democratic Party who served as governor of South Carolina from 1890 to 1894,and as a United States Senator from 1895 until his death in 1918. A white supremacist who opposed civil rights for black Americans,Tillman led a paramilitary group of Red Shirts during South Carolina's violent 1876 election. On the floor of the U.S. Senate,he defended lynching,and frequently ridiculed black Americans in his speeches,boasting of having helped kill them during that campaign.
Thomas Green Clemson was an American politician and statesman,serving as Chargés d'Affaires to Belgium,and United States Superintendent of Agriculture. He served in the Confederate Army and founded Clemson University in South Carolina. Historians have called Clemson "a quintessential nineteenth-century Renaissance man."
Louis Trezevant Wigfall was an American politician who served as a Confederate States Senator from Texas from 1862 to 1865. He was among a group of leading secessionists known as Fire-Eaters,advocating the preservation and expansion of an aristocratic agricultural society based on slave labor. He briefly served as a Confederate Brigadier General of the Texas Brigade at the outset of the American Civil War before taking his seat in the Confederate Senate. Wigfall's reputation for oratory and hard-drinking,along with a combative nature and high-minded sense of personal honor,made him one of the more imposing political figures of his time. He was also a slave owner.

In addition,he has authored more than 200 scholarly articles on these and many other subjects. From 2017 - 2022,Finkelman served as the President and Chancellor of Gratz College,Melrose Park,Pennsylvania.
The 1876 South Carolina gubernatorial election was held on November 7,1876,to select the governor of the state of South Carolina. The election campaign was a referendum on the Radical Republican-led state government and their Reconstruction policies. Opponents disputed the challenger Wade Hampton III's victory,gained by a margin of little more than 1100 votes statewide. But he took office in April 1877,after President Hayes withdrew federal troops as a result of a national Democratic compromise,and the incumbent Daniel Henry Chamberlain left the state.

Alonzo Sheck "Shack" Shealy was an American college football player and coach. He served as the head football coach at Clemson University in 1904 and is the only Clemson graduate to be head football coach of his alma mater. Apparao M Rao is the Robert A. Bowen Endowed Professor of Physics in the department of physics and astronomy,the founding director of the Clemson Nanomaterials Institute,and a former associate dean for discovery in the college of science at Clemson University. Mar Hicks is a historian of technology,gender and modern Europe,notable for their work on the history of women in computing. Hicks is a professor at the University of Virginia’s School of Data Science. Hicks wrote the 2017 book,Programmed Inequality:How Britain Discarded Women Technologists and Lost Its Edge in Computing.
Joseph Drew Lanham is an American author,poet and wildlife biologist who in 2022 entered the MacArthur Fellows Program for his work "combining conservation science with personal,historical,and cultural narratives of nature." Raised in Edgefield,South Carolina,Lanham studied zoology and ecology at Clemson University,where he earned a PhD in 1997. Lanham received his B.A. and M.S. in zoology,and his Ph.D. in Forest Resources. He also currently holds an endowed chair as an Alumni Distinguished Professor. He was also named an alumni master teacher in 2012. He is currently a professor of wildlife science and teaches several classes and lectures on birding. He describes his work in his own words as:"’Connecting the conservation dots’is how I envision my research mission. My past work has focused on the impacts of forest management and other human activities on songbirds,herpetofauna,small mammals and butterflies. More recently I've begun to investigate how ethnicity relate to wildlife and other conservation issues. I'm also interested in how birders and hunters might bridge philosophical gaps to effect conservation in a more holistic way."
