Uganda republic in East Africa

Uganda, officially the Republic of Uganda, is a landlocked country in East-Central Africa. It is bordered to the east by Kenya, to the north by South Sudan, to the west by the Democratic Republic of the Congo, to the south-west by Rwanda, and to the south by Tanzania. Location

The power station is near the settlement of Aswa, off of the Acholibur–Gulu–Olwiyo Road, approximately 60 kilometres (37 mi), north-east of Gulu, the largest town in the Northern Region of Uganda. [1] This is approximately 400 kilometres (249 mi), by road, north of Kampala, the capital and largest city of Uganda. [2]

The Acholibur–Gulu–Olwiyo Road is a road in the Northern Region of Uganda, connecting the town of Acholibur to the city of Gulu and the town of Olwiyo.

Gulu Municipality in Uganda

Gulu is a city in the Northern Region of Uganda. It is the commercial and administrative centre of Gulu District. The coordinates of Gulu Municipality are 2°46'54.0"N 32°17'57.0"E. The distance from Gulu to Kampala, Uganda's capital and largest city, is approximately 340 kilometres (210 mi) by road. The town is served by Gulu Airport and a railway line.

Northern Region, Uganda Region in Northern, Uganda

The Northern region is one of four regions in the country of Uganda. As of Uganda's 2014 census, the region's population was 7,188,139.

Overview

The power station is one of several mini-hydroelectric power stations planned on the Achwa River in the Northern Region of Uganda. Achwa 3 is a run-of-the-river hydroelectricity project with an average flow of 65.5 cubic metres (2,310 cu ft) per second and a gross hydraulic head of about 12.5 metres (41 ft). [3] Open bid tenders have been solicited from qualified engineering firms to carry out the civil and electromechanical installation and to "design, manufacture, install and commission turbines and other associated works of the project". [4]

Achwa River river in South Sudan

The Achwa River is a river of Uganda in eastern Africa. It flows through the northern central part of the country, draining much of Uganda's northern plateau and northeastern highlands, before crossing the border into South Sudan where it joins the White Nile. In South Sudan it is known as the Aswa River.

Run-of-the-river hydroelectricity hydro power station with no or only very small reservoir for storage

Run-of-river hydroelectricity (ROR) or run-of-the-river hydroelectricity is a type of hydroelectric generation plant whereby little or no water storage is provided. Run-of-the-river power plants may have no water storage at all or a limited amount of storage, in which case the storage reservoir is referred to as pondage. A plant without pondage is subject to seasonal river flows, thus the plant will operate as an intermittent energy source. Conventional hydro uses reservoirs, which regulate water for flood control and dispatchable electrical power.

Ownership and funding

Achwa 3 is 99 percent owned by the Africa Renewable Energy Fund (AREF), a US$200 million vehicle created and owned by the African Development Bank to invest in the development stage of renewable energy projects in Sub-Saharan African markets, excluding South Africa. AREF is managed by Berkeley Energy on behalf of the fund owners. [5]

The African Development Bank Group (AfDB) or Banque Africaine de Développement (BAD) is a multilateral development finance institution. The AfDB was founded in 1964 and comprises three entities: The African Development Bank, the African Development Fund and the Nigeria Trust Fund. The AfDB's mission is to fight poverty and improve living conditions on the continent through promoting the investment of public and private capital in projects and programs that are likely to contribute to the economic and social development of the region. The AfDB is a financial provider to African governments and private companies investing in the regional member countries (RMC). While it was originally headquartered in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, the bank's headquarters moved to Tunis, Tunisia, in 2003, due to the Ivorian civil war; before returning in September 2014.

Sub-Saharan Africa area of the continent of Africa that lies south of the Sahara Desert

The sub-Saharan Africa is, geographically, the area of the continent of Africa that lies south of the Sahara. According to the United Nations, it consists of all African countries that are fully or partially located south of the Sahara. It contrasts with North Africa, whose territories are part of the League of Arab states within the Arab world. The states of Somalia, Djibouti, Comoros and the Arabic speaking Mauritania are however geographically in sub-Saharan Africa, although they are members of the Arab League as well. The UN Development Program lists 46 of Africa’s 54 countries as “sub-Saharan,” excluding Algeria, Djibouti, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Somalia, Sudan and Tunisia.

South Africa Republic in the southernmost part of Africa

South Africa, officially the Republic of South Africa (RSA), is the southernmost country in Africa. It is bounded to the south by 2,798 kilometres (1,739 mi) of coastline of Southern Africa stretching along the South Atlantic and Indian Oceans; to the north by the neighbouring countries of Namibia, Botswana, and Zimbabwe; and to the east and northeast by Mozambique and Eswatini (Swaziland); and it surrounds the enclaved country of Lesotho. South Africa is the largest country in Southern Africa and the 25th-largest country in the world by land area and, with over 57 million people, is the world's 24th-most populous nation. It is the southernmost country on the mainland of the Old World or the Eastern Hemisphere. About 80 percent of South Africans are of Sub-Saharan African ancestry, divided among a variety of ethnic groups speaking different African languages, nine of which have official status. The remaining population consists of Africa's largest communities of European (White), Asian (Indian), and multiracial (Coloured) ancestry.
