Gubernatorial elections

The Governor of South Dakota is elected every 4 years. [3] Kristi Noem, the incumbent Governor, was elected in 2018 with 51.0% of the vote, [4] and re-elected in 2022 with 61.9% of the vote. [5] She is the first female governor of the state. [6] Republicans have controlled the governorship since 1979.

State legislative elections

Elections for seats in the South Dakota Legislature are held every even-numbered year. Every seat is contested on every election. [7] The Republican Party holds supermajorities in both chambers, holding a 30–to–4 advantage over Democrats in the state senate, and a 62–to–7 advantage in the state house. Republicans have held both chambers of the legislature since 1995.

He ran for reelection to a fourth term. The Democratic nominee was 26-year Navy, Air Force JAG Corps Veteran, and former college professor Brian Bengs. Thune was ultimately reelected.

Between his state political career and congressional service, Johnson was the vice president of Vantage Point Solutions in Mitchell, South Dakota.

The 2024 North Dakota gubernatorial election will be held on November 5, 2024, to elect the governor of North Dakota, concurrently with the U.S. presidential election, as well as various other federal, state, and local elections. In November 2022, voters in the state approved a constitutional amendment limiting governors to two four-year terms, but it only applies to individuals elected after January 1, 2023, so Burgum is still eligible to run for re-election under a grandfather clause. On June 7, 2023, Burgum announced that he will instead run for the Republican nomination for president of the United States in 2024, a race he dropped out of on December 4, 2023. He may run for re-election as governor following the failure of his presidential campaign. Primary elections will take place on June 11, 2024.

United States gubernatorial elections are scheduled to be held on November 5, 2024, in 11 states and two territories. The previous gubernatorial elections for this group of states took place in 2020, except in New Hampshire and Vermont where governors only serve two-year terms and elected their governors in 2022. In addition to state gubernatorial elections, the territories of American Samoa and Puerto Rico will also hold elections for their governors.

United States gubernatorial elections are scheduled to be held on November 3, 2026, in 36 states and three territories. The previous gubernatorial elections for this group of states took place in 2022, except in New Hampshire and Vermont, where governors serve two-year terms and will elect their governors in 2024. Many races have an incumbent who is term-limited.
