Pagar Alam (sometimes written as Pagaralam, Jawi: ڤاݢر عالم), is a city in South Sumatra, Indonesia. It was formerly part of Lahat Regency, from which it was separated as an independent city on 21 June 2001; before being established as an independent city, Pagar Alam was an administrative city within Lahat Regency. It has an area of 633.66 km2 [2] and a population of 126,181 at the 2010 Census [3] and 143,844 at the 2020 Census; [4] the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 147,071 (comprising 75,280 males and 71,891 females). [1]
Pagar Alam is located by the Bukit Barisan Mountains, at the feet of Mount Dempo, a volcano and the highest mountain in South Sumatra. It is 298 km southwest from the province's capital city of Palembang and 60 km southwest of the town of Lahat. The city is bounded by Bengkulu Province to the south, Jarai District to the north, Kota Agung District to the east and Tanjung Sakti Pumi District to the west. Pagar Alam is one of the main suppliers of vegetables in Palembang. Its location in the highland makes the city slightly cooler than many of the other South Sumatra cities; this, together with its astounding landscape, makes the city one of the main tourist destinations in South Sumatra and it is often visited by local tourists, especially from Palembang. Currently, the city is led by Alpian Maskoni as the mayor of the city.
Pagar Alam is located by the Bukit Barisan Mountains, at the feet of Mount Dempo. Much of the soil in the city consists of latosol and andisol with rugged and hilly topography. The soil in this city is classified as soil with high fertility (class I).
In 2000, Pagar Alam's population was only 112,025 and it increased to 126,181 ten years later, and 143,844 after a further decade. One of the factors in the population increase has been the settlement of migrants who want to live in this city. Beside the city's native inhabitants, the Malay (Besemah), the city population also consists of several other groups, such as the Javanese, Minang, Batak, Chinese, Arabs, and Indians.
Pagar Alam is administratively divided into five districts (kecamatan), tabulated below with their areas and their populations at the 2010 [3] and 2020 [4] Censuses, together with the official estimates as at mid 2022. [1] The table also includes the number of administrative villages (all classed as urban kelurahan) in each district, and its postal codes.

Atung Bungsu Airport is the only airport in Pagar Alam. It is opened on 28 February 2013. [6] With air transport it now is less than one hour from Palembang, instead of eight hours using land transportation. [7]
Beside its landscapes, the city also offer heritage tourism with a lot of megalithic sites. The Pagaralam government will build an integrated tourism area in a 26 hectare bamboo forest at Curup Jahe in North Pagaralam. [8]
South Sumatra is a province of Indonesia, located in the southeast of the island of Sumatra. The capital and largest city of the province is the city of Palembang. The province borders the provinces of Jambi to the north, Bengkulu to the west and Lampung to the south, as well a maritime border with the Bangka Belitung Islands to the east. It is the largest province in the island of Sumatra, and it is slightly smaller than Portugal. The Bangka Strait in the east separates South Sumatra and the island of Bangka, which is part of the Bangka Belitung Islands province. The province is rich in natural resources, such as petroleum, natural gas and coal. The province is inhabited by many different ethnic groups, with Palembangese being largest ethnic group. Most speak the Palembang language, which is mutually intelligible to both Indonesian and local Palembang Malay. Other ethnic groups include the Javanese, Sundanese, Minangkabau and Chinese. Most are concentrated in urban areas and are largely immigrants from other parts of Indonesia.
Jambi is a province of Indonesia. It is located on the east coast of central Sumatra and spans to the Barisan Mountains in the west. Its capital and largest city is also called Jambi. It is bordered by the provinces of Riau to the north, West Sumatra to the west, Bengkulu to the southwest, South Sumatra to the south, and sharing a maritime border with the Riau Islands to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the east. The province has a land area of 49,026.58 km2, and a sea area of 3,274.95 km2. Bandar Lampung is the capital and largest city of the Indonesian province of Lampung. Located on the southern tip of Sumatra, Bandar Lampung was originally called Tanjungkarang–Telukbetung, since it was a unification of two major settlements in Lampung, before being renamed in 1983.
Solok is a city in West Sumatra, Indonesia. The motto of this city is Kota Beras which an abbreviation from "Bersih, Elok, Rapi, Aman dan Sejahtera". Dumai has a domestic airport, Pinang Kampai Airport. Dumai is an important transport and trade centre, both regionally and internationally, especially to Malaysia. Dumai is rich in oil.
Jambi is the capital and largest city of the Indonesian province of Jambi. Located on the island of Sumatra, the city is a busy port on the Batang Hari River and an oil- and rubber-producing centre. The city is located 26 km (16 mi) from the ruins of Muaro Jambi Temple Compounds, an important city in the ancient Srivijaya kingdom.
Tanjungbalai, also colloquially written as Tanjung Balai, is a city in North Sumatra province, Indonesia, on the estuary of the Asahan River. It has an area of 60.52 square kilometers (23.37 sq mi) and the sixth largest kota (urban) population in North Sumatra with 154,445 inhabitants in the 2010 census and 176,027 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 179,748. The town has a ferry terminal with services to Port Klang, Malaysia, and the city-island of Singapore.
Prabumulih is a city in South Sumatra, Indonesia. It was originally part of Muara Enim Regency, from which it was separated to become an independent city on 21 June 2001. It has an area of 477.10 km² and had a population of 161,814 at the 2010 Census and 193,196 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 199,047. Geographically, this city is located at 3°25′58″S 104°14′8″E in the heart of the province, and it is surrounded on all sides by Muara Enim Regency, apart from a short stretch bordering Penukal Abab Lematang Ilir Regency.
Lubuklinggau, is a city in South Sumatra, Indonesia. It has an area of 401.50 km² and had a population of 201,308 at the 2010 Census and 234,166 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 240,238. The city was formerly part of the Musi Rawas Regency from which it was separated on 21 June 2001.
Lahat Regency is a regency of South Sumatra province, Indonesia. It originally included much of the southwestern part of the province, but on 21 June 2001 the town of Pagar Alam was removed from the regency to become an independent city, and on 2 January 2007 the western districts were split off to form the new Empat Lawang Regency. The reduced regency now covers a total area of 4,361.83 km2 and had a population of 369,974 at the 2010 Census and 430,071 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 441,174. The city of Pagar Alam remains an enclave within the regency, but is administratively separate.
Mandailing Natal, abbreviated as Madina, is a regency in North Sumatra Province of Indonesia. It covers an area of 6,620.70 square kilometres and it had a population of 403,894 people at the 2010 census and 472,886 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 484,874. The capital lies at Panyabungan. The Regency was formerly a part of South Tapanuli Regency until it was created as a separate regency on 23 November 1998. It is the southernmost regency in North Sumatra, and the largest regency by land area in the province, with Langkat Regency second to it.
Simalungun Regency is a regency in North Sumatra, Indonesia. Its seat was formerly at Pematangsiantar, but this city was in 1986 separated from the Regency and made into an independent city (kota), although it remains geographically surrounded by the regency, whose new administrative seat is at Raya. The regency now covers an area of 4,372.5 square kilometres, and at the 2010 census it had a population of 817,720; at the 2020 Census this had risen to 990,246, of whom 497,314 were male and 492,932 were female; the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 1,021,615.
South Tangerang is a city in the province of Banten, Indonesia. Located 30 km (19 mi) on the southwestern border of Jakarta, the city forms part of the Greater Jakarta metropolitan area. It was administratively separated from Tangerang Regency on 26 November 2008. According to the 2020 Census, the city population was 1,354,350 inhabitants, while the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 1,378,466. The total area is 164.85 km2 (63.65 sq mi). It's the second-largest city in Banten in terms of population, and has grown rapidly, not only as Jakarta's satellite city, but also the development of business districts and commerce due to presence of large-scale planned town by private developers.
Sungai Penuh is a city in Indonesia, in Jambi province, on the island of Sumatra. It is an enclave within Kerinci Regency, of which it was formerly part but from which it became administratively separate on 24 June 2008. The city, whose name means "Penuh River", is also known as Siulak. It covers an area of 391.50 km2 and had a population of 82,293 at the 2010 Census and 96,610 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 99,233.
Seluma Regency is a regency of Bengkulu Province, Indonesia, on the west coast of the island of Sumatra. It was created on 25 February 2003 from what were formerly the northwestern districts of the South Bengkulu Regency. The regency seat is at the town of Pasar Tais. It covers an area of 2,479.36 km2, and had a population of 173,507 at the 2010 Census and 207,877 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 213,755.
Empat Lawang Regency is a regency of South Sumatra Province, Indonesia. It was created on 2 January 2007 from what had been formerly the western districts of Lahat Regency. It covers an area of 2,256.44 km² and had a population of 221,176 at the 2010 Census and 333,622 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 357,673. The regency seat is at the town of Tebing Tinggi.
Muara Enim Regency is a regency of South Sumatra Province, Indonesia. The regency seat is the town of Muara Enim. The city of Prabumulih is an administrative body separating the main part of Muara Enim to the south of the city from a smaller part to its north. The regency until late 2012 covered an area of 8,587.94 km² and had a population of 717,717 at the 2010 Census; however, on 14 December 2012 five districts from the Muara Enim Regency were split off to form the new Penukal Abab Lematang Ilir Regency.
North Lampung Regency is an inland regency (kabupaten) of Lampung Province, Sumatra, in Indonesia. It has an area of 2,725.63 km2 and had a population of 583,925 at the 2010 census and 633,099 at the 2020 census; the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 635,129. The regency seat is the town of Kotabumi.
Tanggamus Regency is a regency (kabupaten) of Lampung Province, Sumatra, Indonesia. It has an area of 4,654.96 km² and had a population of 534,595 at the 2010 Census and 640,275 at the 2020 Census; the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 652,898. The regency seat is the town of Kota Agung Pusat. The regency was created on 21 March 1997, but districts in its eastern part were split away on 29 October 2008 to form a new Pringsewu Regency. It lies in the southwest of the province, and surrounds Semangka Bay on its west, north and east coasts.
