Elections for the Minnesota State Senate occurred after state-wide redistricting from 2010. The signature-filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was June 5, 2012. Foung Hawj defeated Tom Dimon and Robert Humphrey in the Democratic primary, and defeated Mike Capistrant in the general election. [19] [20]

The Minnesota Senate is the upper house of the Legislature of the U.S. state of Minnesota. At 67 members, half as many as the Minnesota House of Representatives, it is the largest upper house of any U.S. state legislature. Floor sessions are held in the west wing of the State Capitol in Saint Paul. Committee hearings, as well as offices for senators and staff, are located north of the State Capitol in the Minnesota Senate Building. Each member of the Minnesota Senate represents approximately 80,000 constituents.

The Democrats lost a net of three seats, while the Republicans and the Conservative Party of New York picked up one net seat each, and former Democrat Harry F. Patricia Torres Ray is a Colombian-American politician and member of the Minnesota Senate. A member of the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party (DFL), she represents District 63, which includes portions of southeastern Minneapolis and eastern Richfield in Hennepin County in the Twin Cities metropolitan area. She is the first Latina woman to serve in the Minnesota Senate. She ran for Congress in Minnesota's 5th district in 2018 to succeed Congressman Keith Ellison, but lost in the primary to Ilhan Omar. In November, 2021, she announced that she would not run for re-election in 2022.
Nathaniel Willis Parker IV is a businessman and Republican politician who has served since 2007 in the Texas House of Representatives. He was elected in 2006 to represent District 63 in southwestern Denton County. Parker sought the position of Texas House Speaker with the retirement of Joe Straus but then withdrew his candidacy in 2018 to support the consensus choice, Representative Dennis Bonnen of Angleton in Brazoria County. As of 2022, Parker was elected to represent senate district 12, and will continue his public service as a State Senator.

The Independence Party of Minnesota didn't field a candidate for the first time since 1994. Going into the election the polls showed Walz ahead and the race was characterized as lean or likely DFL.

Omar Mahmood Fateh, is a Minnesota politician and a member of the Minnesota Senate.
