Each state in the United States has a senior military officer, as the state adjutant general, who is the de facto commander of a state's military forces, including the National Guard residing within the state, the state's naval militia, and any state defense forces. This officer is known as TAG, and is subordinated to the chief executive. They do not have authority over police forces, only military forces.
John Stephen Kolasheski is a retired United States Army officer who was the commanding general of V Corps from 2020 to 2024.
John Michael “Mike” Murray is a retired United States Army general, the first commanding general of United States Army Futures Command (AFC), a new four-star Army Command (ACOM) headquartered in Austin, Texas. Murray was previously the G-8, a deputy chief of staff to the Chief of Staff of the United States Army (CSA). As G-8, Murray served as the principal advisor to the CSA for materiel requirements, as military counterpart to the Assistant Secretary of the Army for acquisition, logistics, and technology.
Ronald Patrick "Ron" Clark a United States Army lieutenant general who serves as the senior military assistant to the secretary of defense. He previously served as the commander of the 25th Infantry Division, and, before that, as Chief of Staff, United States Army Pacific.
Walter E. Piatt is a retired United States Army lieutenant general who was appointed chief executive officer of Wounded Warrior Project on March 18, 2024. He last served as the 57th Director of the Army Staff from 2019 to 2024. He enlisted in the army in 1979 and served four years as an infantryman. After graduating from Lock Haven University, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1987. Prior to assuming his current position, Piatt was the Commanding General, 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum. His other assignments as a general officer include serving as the 52nd Chief of Infantry; Deputy Commanding General-Support, 10th Mountain Division; Commander, Joint Multinational Training Command; Deputy Commanding General, United States Army Europe; and director of Operations/director, Rapid Equipment Fielding, Army Rapid Capabilities Office.
Sean Cardona Bernabe is a United States Army lieutenant general who serves as the commanding general of III Armored Corps since October 4, 2022. He previously served as the commanding general of the 1st Armored Division from September 30, 2020 to July 14, 2022.
David Matthew Hodne is a United States Army lieutenant general who has served as the deputy commanding general for futures and concepts of United States Army Futures Command and director of the Futures and Concepts Center since January 9, 2024. He most recently served as the commanding general of the 4th Infantry Division and Fort Carson from 2021 to 2023. Milford H. Beagle Jr. is a United States Army lieutenant general who serves as commanding general of the United States Army Combined Arms Center and commandant of the United States Army Command and General Staff College since October 4, 2022. He served as the commanding general of the 10th Mountain Division and Fort Drum from July 12, 2021 to September 9, 2022. Charles R. Hamilton is a former United States Army general, and current major general, who last served as the commanding general of United States Army Materiel Command from 16 March 2023 to 22 March 2024. He previously served as the Assistant Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics of the United States Army from May 2021 to March 2022, and prior to that was the Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics and Operations of the United States Army Materiel Command from July 2020 to April 2021.
Christopher C. LaNeve is a United States Army lieutenant general who has served as the commanding general of Eighth Army and chief of staff of the Combined Forces Command since April 5, 2024. He most recently served as the commanding general of the 82nd Airborne Division from 2022 to 2023. He previously served as the deputy chief of staff for operations, plans, and training of the United States Army Forces Command.
