The service began after its creation by the city of San Leandro in 2002. [2] [4] The services currently offers one line, BART Shuttle also known simply as LINKS. [2] The shuttle has been successful since its inception year when it transported 9,000 passengers a month. [6]
The shuttle service's vehicles use compressed natural gas coaches. [7]
The bus line operates on a counter-clockwise loop connecting job centers in San Leandro with the San Leandro BART station. [2] The bus services is partially funded by the West San Leandro Shuttle Business Improvement District. [4] This special district is funded by a special purpose business fee on the business community of the westside. [4] In 2008 the tax was and therefore the service was extended for another five years until 2013 because more than 50% of businesses did not "protest". [4]
Passengers may connect to BART trains from throughout the Bay Area at this station on the Richmond–Warm Springs/South Fremont and Warm Springs/South Fremont–Daly City lines. [8] There are also half a dozen AC Transit bus lines that connect at the San Leandro BART station transit center. [9] The service runs from 5AM to 9AM and then from 3PM to 8PM Monday through Friday. The Oakland Airport Connector is an automated guideway transit (AGT) system operated by Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) between BART's Coliseum station and Oakland International Airport station. The line is colored on BART maps as the Beige Line. The system is integrated into BART's fare system. The line opened for revenue service on November 22, 2014, replacing the AirBART shuttle bus service that had operated since July 1, 1977. Currently operating between two terminal stations, the system includes provisions for an intermediate third station that may be built at a later date.
The Dumbarton Rail Corridor is a proposed transbay passenger rail line which would reuse the right-of-way that was initially constructed from 1907–1910 as the Dumbarton Cut-off. The Dumbarton Cut-off includes the first structure to span San Francisco Bay, the 1910 Dumbarton Rail Bridge, although the vintage Cut-off bridges would likely be replaced prior to activating new passenger service. Dumbarton Rail Corridor would provide service between Union City in the East Bay and Menlo Park on the Peninsula, with train service continuing to both San Francisco and San José along the existing Caltrain tracks. It has been in the planning stages since 1988, and would be the first above-ground transbay rail line since Key System electric trains stopped running on the lower deck of the Bay Bridge in 1958, and the first new transbay crossing of any kind since the completion of the Transbay Tube in 1974.
