Samiran Nundy is an Indian gastrointestinal surgeon, medical academic, writer and the President of All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Rishikesh. [1] He is a former member of the faculty at the Cambridge University, London University and Harvard University, and is the founder editor of the National Medical Journal of India and Tropical Gastroenterology. [1] The Government of India awarded him the fourth-highest Indian civilian honour of Padma Shri in 1985. [2]

Biography

Nundy did his undergraduate studies in medicine at Cambridge University and the Guy's Hospital, London after which he completed his residency at the Hammersmith Hospital. [3] This was followed by a series of surgical training programmes at Guy's Hospital, Addenbrooke's Hospital, Hammersmith Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston. [4]

During his stay abroad, he had teaching stints at Cambridge University, London University and Harvard University. [1] Returning to India in 1975, he joined the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi as a member of the faculty and stayed there until his superannuation in 1996. [3] During his tenure there, he helped found the Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery and Liver Transplantation at AIIMS, of which he was the founder professor. [5]

In 1996, he joined Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Delhi where he is the Emeritus Consultant of the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology and Liver Transplantation. [6] He led the team which is credited with 241 liver sections during the period 1996-2005, the details of which were published in a medical paper, Two hundred and forty-one consecutive liver resections: an experience from India. [7]

Nundy is the founder editor of the National Medical Journal of India [1] and Tropical Gastroenterology, [4] and the incumbent editor-in-chief of Current Medicine Research and Practice. [8] [9] He is the co-chairman of the department of academics at the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. [10] He is also associated with the Indian Journal of Medical Ethics as its editor, and Edpulseline.com as a member of its advisory board.[ citation needed ] He is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. [4] His research findings have been documented by way of several articles and medical papers of which ResearchGate has listed 190, [11] while Google Scholar has listed 320. [12]

Nandy serves as a member of the advisory board of Medicounsel, a medical advisory organization composed of noted medical specialists, engaged in providing guidance to patients inflicted with rare and complicated diseases. [3] He is also a part of the team of 290 specialists of DoctorNDTV. Com, [13] an online consultation forum, functioning under the aegis of the NDTV network. The website is reported to have a monthly average of 400 million views and, 3600 queries. [3] His contributions are also reported behind the Transplantation of Human Organs Act 1994, which made human organ trading illegal and recognised brain death as a form of death in India. [10]

The Government of India awarded him the civilian honour of Padma Shri in 1985. [2]

Social activism

In May 2014, Nundy wrote an editorial in the Journal of Current Medicine Research and Practice in which he exposed the corrupt practices in the Indian health sector. [14] He mentioned the practice of unnecessary investigations and referrals made by the doctors and their practice of accepting commissions for the referrals. [9] He suggested computerisation of medical records and procedure audits to combat this trend. [9] His editorial was inspired by the article, "Corruption ruins the doctor-patient relationship in India", published in the British Medical Journal and written by David Berger, an Australian physician who had worked as a volunteer at a charitable hospital in India. [15] The article and the subsequent editorial made news among the medical fraternity and have drawn concurring responses from the government. [16]

Subrat Kumar Acharya is a gastroenterologist and liver transplant physician, a physician scientist, a prolific writer and a passionate teacher. Acharya is well known for his compassion and patient-centric approaches in treating complex diseases.

Philip Augustine, an Indian gastroenterologist, specialist in gastrointestinal endoscopy and a hospital administrator from Ernakulam, Kerala. He founded the Lakeshore Hospital and Research Centre in 2003, one of the largest multispeciality hospitals in south India. In 2010, the Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri, for his services to the fields of medicine.

Amit Prabhakar Maydeo, is an Indian Gastroenterologist and endoscopy expert, known for his pioneering efforts on therapeutic endoscopy and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). He was honoured by the Government of India, in 2013, by bestowing on him the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, for his contributions to the fields of medicine and medical education. His son, Dr. Rohan Maydeo is a surgeon from MGM Medical College and Hospital, Aurangabad.

Later, he joined Medeor Hospital as the head of the Orthopedic Department and is the incumbent chairman of its advisory board.

Surinder Kumar Sama is an Indian gastroenterologist, known for his expertise in endocrinology and diabetology. He is considered by many as the Father of Gastroenterology in India. The discovery of Non-cirrhotic portal fibrosis, an idiopathic chronic liver disease is attributed to him, which he described in a 1962 medical paper, co-authored with Ramalingaswami and Wig. The Government of India awarded him the civilian honour of the Padma Shri in 2004 for his pioneering research on liver diseases including Non-cirrhotic portal fibrosis and Hepatitis B. Sama also received the highest Indian medical honour of Dr. B. C. Roy Award in 2004.

Upendra Kaul is an Indian cardiologist and one of the pioneers of interventional cardiology in India. He is the Chairman and Dean Academics and Research at the Batra Hospital and Medical Research Center. He is known for his expertise in procedures such as Percutaneous Cardiopulmonary bypass, Rotational and Directional Atherectomy, Coronary stenting and Percutaneous Laser Myocardial Revascularization. He graduated in medicine (MBBS) from the Maulana Azad Medical College and continued his studies at the same institution to secure MD in 1975 and, DM in cardiology in 1978. Later, he obtained advanced training in interventional cardiology from Australia during 1983 to 84. He has served the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) as a professor of cardiology and has been a member of the faculty of the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, G. B. Pant Hospital, Batra Hospital and Fortis Health Care, NCR. and Executive Director and Dean at Fortis Health Care, New Delhi.

Narmada Prasad Gupta is an Indian urologist, medical researcher, writer and the Chairman of Academics and Research Division Urology at the Medanta, the Medicity, New Delhi. He is credited with over 10,000 urological surgical procedures and the highest number of URobotic surgeries in India. He is a former head of department of Urology of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences Delhi and a former president of the Urological Society of India. He received Dr. B. C. Roy Award, the highest Indian award in the medical category, from the Medical Council of India in 2005. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2007, for his contributions to Indian medicine.

Badri Nath Tandon is an Indian gastroenterologist, hepatologist, medical researcher and academic, and the Chairman and Senior Consultant of Gastroenterology, at Metro Hospitals and Heart Institute, Noida. He is a former Professor and Head of Department of Gastroenterology and Human Nutrition Unit at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi (AIIMS) and a former Director and Senior Consultant of Hepatology and Gastroenterology at Pushpawati Singhania Research Institute for Liver, Renal and Digestive Diseases, New Delhi. He is a recipient of several awards including Sasakawa WHO Health Prize and Jubilee Medal of the RAMS. The Government of India awarded him the third highest civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan, in 1986, for his contributions to medicine.

Shiv Kumar Sarin is an Indian gastroenterologist, hepatologist, translational scientist, researcher and teacher. He set up the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences. He is a recipient of the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize and the Padma Bhushan. He served as Chairman of the Board of Governors of Medical Council of India. He was the president of the Asian Pacific Association for the Study of the Liver and founder of Asian Pacific School of Hepatology.

Dinesh K. Bhargava is an Indian gastroenterologist, medical academic and writer and a senior consultant at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, Delhi. He is one of the pioneers of gastrointestinal endoscopy in India for which the Medical Council of India awarded him Dr. B. C. Roy Award, the highest Indian award in the medical category, in 1989. He is also a recipient of the civilian honor of the Padma Shri.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Giriraj Singh Bora</span> Indian surgeon

Giriraj Singh Bora is an Indian liver transplant surgeon. He is the founder member of the Liver Transplant Society of India. Bora was the first surgeon to successfully transplant a liver in Rajasthan. He carried out the first deceased donor and the first living donor liver transplants in Rajasthan and has been instrumental in starting a liver transplant program in the region. He currently serves as the joint director of Liver Transplantation and senior consultant of Gastrointestinal Surgery at Artemis Hospital.
