Biography

He joined the Madras Medical College and completed his MBBS in 1962. In 1963, he joined the Army Medical Corps and served in the Indo-Pakistani War. For his service, he was awarded the Samar Seva Star and the Sainya Seva Medal. [2] [3]

Following his military service, he joined the Stanley Medical College and obtained an MD. He was appointed an assistant professor in the Madras Medical College. He started the Department of Diabetology in 1978. [4]

He was also involved with establishing the Pregnancy and Diabetes division at the Government Hospital for Women and Children in Chennai. [5] He has been the Founder and patron of Diabetes in Pregnancy Study Group India(DIPSI) since 2004. [6]

National GDM Awareness Day The government of India (MOHFW) started in 2019, recognizing the significant impact of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus on women's health, and has taken a crucial step. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare declared Prof. Seshah's birthday on March 10″ as India GDM Awareness Day. [7]

Senior diabetologists advocate the use of Metformin by the 8th week of pregnancy to prevent gestational diabetes. [8] When fetal insulin secretion begins, changes happen in maternal metabolism, says Dr. Seshiah. Hyperglycaemia causes non-communicable diseases in later life, so gestational diabetes is the mother of NCDs and transgenerational transmission of diabetes should be avoided. [9]

President of India, Mr Kovind, presented the Padma Shri to Dr. Veeraswamy Seshiah for Medicine in 2022, a distinguished professor of Tamilnadu's Dr. MGR Medical University, for a lifetime. [10]

Dr GB, as he is fondly known as, was born on 5 April 1942 at Annur village of Coimbatore district and graduated with a Masters of Science from Madras Medical College. Krishnaswami Srinivas Sanjivi (1903–1994) was an Indian medical doctor, Gandhian, social worker and the founder of Voluntary Health Services (VHS), a medical facility in Chennai reported to be serving the lower and middle-class people of the society. He was honoured by the Government of India in 1971 with Padma Shri, the fourth highest Indian civilian award. Five years later, the government followed it up by awarding him the third highest civilian award of Padma Bhushan in 1976.

Suniti Solomon was an Indian physician and microbiologist who pioneered AIDS research and prevention in India after having diagnosed the first Indian AIDS cases among the Chennai sex workers in 1986 along with her student Sellappan Nirmala. She founded the Y R Gaitonde Centre for AIDS Research and Education in Chennai. The Indian government conferred the National Women Bio-scientist Award on her. On 25 January 2017, the Government of India awarded her the Padma Shri for medicine for her contributions towards diagnosis and treatment of HIV.

Mohan Kameswaran is an Indian otorhinolaryngologist, medical academic and the founder of MERF Institute of Speech and Hearing, a Chennai-based institution providing advanced training in audiology and speech-language pathology. He is one of the pioneers of cochlear implant surgery in India and a visiting professor at Rajah Muthiah Medical College of the Annamalai University and Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute, Chennai. He has many firsts to his credit such as the performance of the first auditory brain stem implantation surgery in South and South East Asia, the first pediatric brain stem implantation surgery in Asia, the first totally implantable hearing device surgery in Asia Pacific region, and the first to introduce KTP/532 laser-assisted ENT surgery in India. C. U. Velmurugendran is an Indian neurologist, medical writer and the chairman and head of the Department of Neurology at the Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute, Chennai. He is an honorary professor at the Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences, Tirupati and has contributed chapters to books including Diseases of the Spinal Cord, published in 2012. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2008, for his contributions to medicine.

Thoguluva Shesadri Chandrasekar is an Indian gastroenterologist and the founder chairman of Medindia Hospitals, a healthcare facility based in Chennai. He is credited with the performance of over 23,000 endoscopy procedures and is known for the Braille chart on personal hygiene he prepared in 2015 for the visually impaired people. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2016, for his contributions to medicine.

Damodar Ganesh Bapat was an Indian social worker known for his service to the leprosy patients at Bhartiya Kushta Nivarak Sangh (BKNS) in Janjgir–Champa district, Chhattisgarh, India. In 2018, the Government of India awarded him the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian award, in recognition of his social work. He was also awarded the Chhattisgarh Rajya Alankar by the state of Chhattisgarh.

Dr. Maria Ruth B. Pineda-Cortel is an associate professor and laboratory coordinator at the University of Santo Tomas (UST) where she teaches at the Department of Medical Technology of the Faculty of Pharmacy. She also does research at the university's Research Center for the Natural Sciences and Applied Sciences (RCNAS). Pineda-Cortel has done extensive research focusing on gestational diabetes mellitus and polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) as a way to shed light on diseases that only affect women. As a woman of science, she advocates and works towards improving healthcare for women. Pineda-Cortel has also done research covering many health-related issues that include the effects of climate change on infectious diseases that are prevalent in the Philippines, such as dengue and malaria.

Vijay Viswanathan is a diabetologist from India who is the chief diabetologist at M.V. Hospital for Diabetes based in Chennai. He is also the President of Prof. M. Viswanathan Diabetes Research Centre and the first Asian President of D-Foot International, a non-profit organization based in Belgium. Viswanathan has published over 543 research papers, in publications including the National Library of Medicine, on topics such as primary prevention and management of diabetes, diabetic foot and prevention of amputation, diabetic nephropathy, socio-economics of diabetes care and Pulmonary TB and diabetes.
