Shady Oak is an unincorporated community in northern Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. Shady Oak is primarily a residential community on the Potomac River.
Fairfax County, officially the County of Fairfax is a county of the Commonwealth of Virginia in the United States. Part of Northern Virginia, Fairfax County borders both the City of Alexandria and Arlington County and forms part of the inner suburban ring of Washington, DC. The county is thus predominantly suburban in character, with some urban and rural pockets.

The river is approximately 405 miles (652 km) long, with a drainage area of about 14,700 square miles (38,000 km2). In terms of area, this makes the Potomac River the fourth largest river along the Atlantic coast of the United States and the 21st largest in the United States. Over 5 million people live within the Potomac watershed.
