Butebo District is a district in the Eastern Region of Uganda. Like most other Ugandan districts, it is named after its chief town, Butebo, where the district headquarters are located. [2]

Location

Butebo District is bordered to the north by (from west to east) Ngora District, Kumi District and Bukedea District. Mbale District lies to the east, Budaka District lies to the south and Pallisa District lies to the west. [3] The location of the district headquarters at Butebo are located approximately 51 kilometres (32 mi), by road, northwest of the city of Mbale, the largest city in Eastern Uganda. [4]

Overview

Following requests for district status by the residents, [1] President Yoweri Museveni, in 2010, instructed his Minister of Local Government at the time, Adolf Mwesige, table a law in the Ugandan parliament to that effect. [5] The law was tabled in parliament in August 2015, with the district to become operational on 1 July 2017. [6] Prior to then the district was "Butebo County" in Pallisa District. [7]

In 2008, the population of Butebo District was estimated at 120,000 people. [1]

Stephen Oscar Mallinga, was a Ugandan medical doctor and politician. At the time of his death, he was the Minister of Disaster Preparedness and Refugees. He was appointed to that position on 27 May 2011. He replaced Tarsis Kabwegyere, who was dropped from the Cabinet. From 2006 until 2011, he served as Uganda's Minister of Health. He was also the elected Member of Parliament (MP), representing the Butebo County Constituency, in Pallisa District. He was buried on 19 April 2013 in Pallisa.

Mbale Regional Referral Hospital, commonly known as Mbale Hospital is a hospital in Mbale, Eastern Uganda. It is the referral hospital for the districts of Busia, Budaka, Kibuku, Kapchorwa, Bukwa, Butaleja, Manafwa, Mbale, Pallisa, Sironko and Tororo. The hospital also serves many more patients from outside the hospital's catchment area.

Budadiri is a town in the Eastern Region of Uganda. It is one of the urban centers in Sironko District.
